I was checking out ebay and some nice pipes had putrid stems. A quick google search suggested stems are pretty inexpensive and there are lots of standard sizes.
I know nothing about quality or the best stem brands, but is it simply easier and cheaper to buy a new stem for an estate pipe than refurbishing the old stem? I figure with some brands replacing the stem affects the value.

Buying a stem and getting the right fit is harder than it seems. Most folks will send them out and have a stem fitted. As long as the stem is not chewed up they are easy to clean.

+1 to that. I have cleaned up several nasty stems with little more than oxyclean, magic erasers, and Micromesh sandpaper. You can invest in a buffing wheel and compounds if you like, but I dont have the money or the space for that sort of setup.
