So I was cleaning my J.Powell pipe and the stem oxidized so i did the oxyclean treatment and every thing was fine I stared to polish it and it scratched and melted in spots It seems to be the same type of plastic the MM uses feels the same between the teeth. so now I am looking to up grade the stem. Will I have to send in the pipe to some one or can I just buy a new stem? Here is the pipe.

Well if you feel comfortable doing the work and have the tools to fit the stem to the pipe then you can definitely order the stem. Otherwise sending it out would be the way it has to be. Just keep in mind that it's not like replacing a part on a car.

If the stem was oxidized it is not plastic. What were you polishing it with?

There's a number of good pipe repair shops out there. Google "smoking pipe repair".
