back in the 1970's, one of my very favorite pipe tobacs was Half and Half. I smoked other tobacs, but Half/Half was always my go to. Although there are tremendous tobaccos available today, and I enjoy quite a few, at times I miss the unique taste/spice/ flavor of the Hald and half. Todays version just is not close , in my opinion. Has anyone ever come across a decent replacement for that unforgettable flavor in H&H? Thanks - Rob

C&D's Gentleman Cller is supposed to be a recreation, haven't tried it yet, I would love to hear a review from someone who knows the old half and half

My B&M has a bulk that they call half and half. Whiskey and vanilla.

anything like that.

Gwynclan: Half n Half to my knowledge/limited experience has an anise topping, not a whisky/vanilla. Interesting your B&M would use that name. Seems like it would create a bit of confusion.

Half and Half is a half burley half VA blend, what most people miss is the deer tongue, it used to have deer tongue in it and it gave it a different flavor profile

jchaplick, here is what you asked for...
I smoked H&H for 29 years. But, as I became involved in blending tobacco I worked long an hard to re-rcreate the H&H I had loved for so long after they dropped the deer tongue because of it's expense and difficulty in obtaining. I blended half Burley with half Red Virginia and added deer tongue (an Herb). It was missing the "cinnamic" topping. To make a long story short, I got very close spraying it with professional tobacco sauces consisting of Cinnamon and butterscotch. Following that accomplishment, I joined forces with Craig Tarler of C&D and went on to create the Captain Bob's C&D blends, none of which resemble H&H. But, C&D has a wonderful blend called Gentleman Caller. It contains no topping at all. It does contain deer-tongue. More than the old H&H had. I keep it on hand at all times and smoke it in place of my urge for H&H. In my opinion, it is better than H&H.

I love that you blended your own blend with C&D. I have added it to my TAD list and plan on trying it ASAP.
I only wish you would participate a little more on the forums Bob lol

ditto captainbob's recommendation of Gentleman Caller. I smoke it daily in a Stanwell Golden Danish. as close to the original H&H as you'll find.

I enjoy today's H&H... I think I'll give Gentleman Caller a run one day... another entry for the pipe journal.
