Since this craze with McCleland seizing operations I have managed, through the typical eastern block contraband ways, to get me a Frog Morton the original. Nice tobacco, sweet nose and aroma. Quite an interesting combination of sweet virginia and latakia. My complaint though, is that no matter what I did to it is seems that the sugar from the virginia mostly, and probably casing keep biting my head off. It burns very slow to begin with, and my english heavy rotation smokes mostly with oily tobacco and not so much sugary. I guess that when tempted to smoke like your average english I puff it too fast. It needs some relights, and after each it is burning even hotter. Was not very contempt with the blend ... drying it for a bit more than usual ruins it. What I mean to say is that it gets brittle very fast ... annoying. Now matching this with a church warden, different story - just like smoking different tobacco. What did I do wrong? Do I smoke too hot (for this blend at least - like I said night cap for example smokes fine in my usual rhythm) or did I miss match the tobacco pipe pairing? All in all ... I would like to smoke this in a couple of other pipes, not just the church warden.

I have the same problem with the biting and relighting with McC. Funny, I had never put that together with me smoking heavy English tobaccos. Maybe it needs a reverse calabash.....

Many insist that the extra length of a churchwarden stem neither cools the smoke nor mellows the flavor. You experience would second-guess this idea. I don't know about the cooling, but I do "get" some mellowing, or think I do. Maybe that's what is going on for you.

I find churchwardens to definitely cool the smoke but the acids that cause tonguebite are also less likely to travel that far up the stem. You could also try a radiator pipe.

I guess I came in late with this topic, since everybody is sick and tired of McCleland threats as of late. I guess I will be sticking to my church warden, or even better, this may be a good reason to buy another church warded - I am sure the wife will agree  It may be placebo, since everybody keeps talking about church wardens smoking cooler and mellowing taste - not so sure about the mellowing part, although I must admit that most tobaccos taste different in a church warden - but somewhat cooler definitely. Meanwhile, I can hardly get that frog morton to behave properly in anything else ... there is this French St. Claude that comes close, but that's about it.

I personally have found the Frog Morton series to be very smooth. It could be that what i have has just a couple of years of age on them. Or maybe it's my smoking style, slow and easy. Adjusting my draws from the temperature of the smoke. Try it and let me know if your Frog behaves any better...

Oh, one more thing. If you find the Frog to be a bit moist, let it breathe for a bit until it is the right moisture level for you. This could be a factor.
