Hi!

I am very fond of Samuel Gawith's Squad Leader and Skiff Mixture. What would you recommend in a flake that has a similar light English quality like those? They have fantastic rich flavors compared to stronger English, to my tastes.

Thanks!

Sam Gawith’s Navy Flake is a fairly tasty Virginia Flake with a tiny bit of Latakia in it. It isn’t too exciting to me, but the quality is good and it’s very light in Latakia.

There are a few Latakia-blend flakes, but I'm struggling to think of any I'd call light. Quiet Nights is great but a fairly full blend. Sextant is pretty light in Latakia, but has a rum topping which might not be your thing. What about SG Balkan Flake? 70/30 VA/Latakia. I prefer Oriental leaf with my Latakia, but it might be a goid choice.

Try GH Bob’s Chocolate Flake. It sounds weird but its 8% Latakia and the chocolate topping is pretty subtle. Very smooth.

Not a ton of english flakes out there, let alone light ones. Not a flake, but Rattrays Red Rapparee would probably be up your alley as well. Or maybe Amphora English. I found it pretty light.

Seconding Balkan Flake, but it doesn't have oriental tobaccos so perhaps doesn't cut it.

I think "light" means different to different people. E.g. for me light = hot air, regardless of the blend components.

Thanks for the replies! Indeed I want to avoid aromatics unless topping is very very minimal, but then it wouldn't be called an aromatic would it :P

Nothing in the vein of Skiff Mixture as a flake?

I'd really give Quiet Nights a chance. It's a fuller blend, but it's a Latakia blend by GL Pease which means it's very well balanced. If you don't like it, it will be easy to find a trading/selling partner. No noticeable added flavors, if any.
