I wa getting frustrated heating the tenon/mortise screws to correct over-clocked stem attachments with an open flame.
Here’s what I found to work great: get soldering iron hot, then hold in fixture for 40 or so seconds. Using pliers index the threads where you want them.
Reheat and lightly screw together to point you want then apply pressure stem to stummel until cool.
Voila-perfectly clocked with no misalignment gapping between stem and stummel.

A Lee does not have to be reheated. Use a pair of pliers to hold the screw and turn the stem with your other hand.

Almost crushing the two that I did told me otherwise, and the bent one I did just backing out an 1/8 of a turn opened the gap between stem and shank enough to see light through.
I guess my mileage varied…

Wow. That's a first. Briarlee has not had to heat any of his nor have I. I wonder if something else is going on with your pipe. Sorry to hear that.

It’s all good, one of the ones was from Van.

I’d read they can be unscrewed a bit by hand but when mine didn’t budge Icame across a couple of Lee restorations at rebornpipes that had this in the photoessay:
“ started my part of the restoration work on this pipe by addressing the overclocked stem. I heat the tenon in the stem to loosen the glue that holds it and then twisted the stem into position and aligned it on the shank. I let the pipe cool and the glue reset before removing the stem”.
Just figured a guy that restores that many pipes was credible regarding the pieces being glued even though threaded.

A high condition Lee doesn’t need heat.

If they were all glued up from lots of tars, then heat would be needed.
