Edit- caps and brevity. Original: "Is there any way to reattach a tenon that has broken off of the stem?"

It happened so long ago that I don't remember how, but it's one of my favorite pipes. I'd love to keep the original stem.

If not, what is the best source for a new stem?

A new tenon can be made for your stem and the old one removed. It's not a simple repair to do correctly. You could try contacting georged on this forum or check out some pipe repair services.

Re-attaching a tenon will result in failure 100% of the time. You'll need to make a new tenon and counter-bore the stem to receive the new tenon.

Unless skilled at the repair, I’d not try to do it unless it’s a basket and you don’t really care about the outcome. If the pipe is important to ya, send it to a professional to have a new tenon built and mortise attached properly. Shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive for most repair specialists. 👍☕

Carefully try a screw extractor.

Repost: If the tenon is broken in half I can give you an idea how to do an easy fix. Find an old ball point pen with a metal refill. Cut off a short, maybe half inch, piece, wash it, and using super glue insert it in the stem half way and then glue the broken piece on being sure to match the break points. Let it day overnight. That's all there is to it. Without something to hold the two pieces together simply gluing the tenon together will result in a later failure. Good luck. p.s. I smoke a pipe all the time I fixed that way 50 years ago! puffy

This is exactly the idea I had... using an insert that secures the two pieces internally. Simply joining the two pieces end to end won't work. I do all of my own repair work on just about everything and figure this is pretty simple and zero risk to the pipe itself. I am going to have a look at various non corrosive options for the insert, and can even overbore the airway a bit to accommodate.

Failing that, I'll send it in to a repair shop.
