Check my previous posting on Peterson Prince Churchwardens. For some reason everyone is withholding their advice. C'mon guys, you've got a reputation to uphold of convincing people to buy pipes. What is the Prince Churchwarden like? I don't have any churchwardens around (unless you count The Shire) and I'm looking for a Christmas gift to myself. In particular I'm wondering how large this unusual chamber really is and if anyone owns a prince, what it's like, etc, in short is this a substantial pipe?. Thanks in advance.

I'm happy with my Petersons but I have no churchwarden Petersons. My churchwardens are the Savinelli 601 no-filter blast shown in my avatar, the Big Ben Lectura available from PC, and the small EWA offered at a good price at Iwan Ries. All are nice smokers and well-made pipes, and I would recommend them instead of or in addition to the Peterson churchwarden. The Sav and the EWA are full curved in the classic style, and the Big Ben is straight. You do need to buy long pipe cleaners for churchwardens, just as a reminder.

Buy a northern Briars churchwarden lol. How's that for advice.

I couldn't agree more. My Northern Briars warden sets proudly in its rest next to my smoking chair. It is the only real warden I have, so smoking it gives me a special connection, because I usually clench and breathsmoke. So, I have to watch my cadence. It gives me about three hours of smoking pleasure at a time, and is fantastic for movie nights with the family.

Petersons? I have to apologize, I cannot say much about the Pete Wardens, as I've never even seen one in person.

I have a Peterson Churchwarden. It is pretty but the bowl is too small and thus the bowl gets really hot. Way too hot to hold. I've actually thought about selling it as I never smoke it. The one I have is racing green. That Northern Briars Churchwarden looks like a better buy.

Thank you for that...and Cosmic's photo. It's the first time I've heard of Northern Briar, and I went to their site and left a message. If their Churchwarden's aren't crazy priced, I will be buying one.

I don't think anyone is with holding advice. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has any experience with the pipe in question.
Why not just buy the damn thing and let us know how she smokes!!!!

He makes great pipes. If you can't get one before Dec as he usually on 2 month waiting list, there are a couple on Smokingpipes.com.

The good thing about northern Briars and Ian is he can make you whatever you want. A great guy to work with on custom pipes.

*Warning pete-aficionado's opinion ahead*
I have one of these pipes in my collection for over a year and here is my feedback:

As a big fan of the 03 shape I had to have one of these. As the 03 is the little brother of the 02 shape, I consider this to the baby brother of the family. The bowl is very light, my 03 are all around the 57gr mark, at 33gr this is very light and delicate. The shank is very thin and can get a bit hot at the end of the bowl(especially during the break-in). If at all applicable for churchwardens, the reduced weight allows me to clench it when grabbing something.

Although not being a fan of big hefty pipes, even I consider this to be a small bowl. I use it for flakes exclusively which deliver a 1-2h smoke.

Mine was not stain-dipped but pre-carbed. It was fully broken-in after about 10 bowls which is rather short(I have broken in about 25 new petes, so I have some experience taming the beasts from Dublin :) )

Drilling was perfect and it has an nice cross-grain.

During the break-in it suffered from the typical churchwarden problems: gurgle due to condensation in the stem and wet dottle near the end of the smoke. These 'issues' disappeared rather quickly after a few smokes (or my technique improved dramatically)
I have also a D6 in my collection which gives a longer smoke, but for some reason I more often go for the prince shape
Tomorrow I'm also going in for the Xmas shopping spree and I was eye-balling the new pete churchwarden shapes. If it should come to a heart-braking choice between them and a prince shape, the prince would win, or I would have to dust of the ol' negotiation skills to convince the missus that as with shoes: 2 is always better than 1.
Good luck with your purchase and already a merry Xmas
