Read This Preface Over a Bowl

I found this in the most peculiar way. I was searching for an old Marlon Brando interview on YouTube, the one where he mockingly says something like “ Have you tried acting?”to others in the group ( method actors). I randomly watched a Johnny Depp interview where they discuss his meeting Brando and over the phone Johnny begins quoting this passage and Brando finishes it in the middle as they had both memorized it. Apparently upon meeting in person they both still had their tattered and dogeared copies at hand, had carried them on their person for years. I felt profoundly touched at first reading. I might have to keep a copy in my wallet to ponder for these last minutes or decades myself, what a mystery we are involved in indeed.

It sort of commends humility while not sounding altogether humble, in the sense of keeping a modesty of perspective about yourself. I can see Brando and Depp reciting this as a show stopper. Does this have an author, or is it from the august Anon.?

So what’s the point of this?

There’s no point to anything in life, the heat death of the universe will erase everything every human had ever done, hoped for or aspired to, and your favorite tobacco will eventually either be discontinued or utterly ruined through greed, apathy or corporate stupidity. But in the meantime it’s just a thought to ponder whilst smoking your pipe and/or squandering your ever dwindling life force reading this post. ?

So, you know, the usual.

Actually I guess I remembered it wrong it was Sir Lawrence Oliver condemning method acting to Hoffman , and Brando himself was a method actor perhaps quoting him? I wish I could remember what talk show it was and who was involved I just remember it being quite funny at the time. “ my dear boy you should just try acting ,it’s so much easier”
