Seriously brothers/sisters....jut skip the 100g tins and go right to

the 500g bags of this stuff...been smoking some with a

year of age on it....WOW/knock your socks off goodness...but take

time to prepare for her, never rush it...give good air-time prep before

loading up a bowl and you will be in for a truly blissful smoke
BTW: I rememeber reading somewhere from MC about giving your taste buds

about four days or so of just smoking Vs to adjust and really pick up

the flavors...this truly works/since my tastes are all over (VaPer , Burleys,

Med-full English blends) tough to do knowing I have some

great English blends waiting on me, but find the Spring/Summer months

perfect for Vs

I love the stuff. There was about a 3 or 4 month period a few years back that, barring the very occasional light English, Marlin Flake was all that I smoked. Another tobacco that taught me a lesson about prep, air time and slow smoking. I find that if you smoke Marlin flake right out of the tin it is a hot bloated mess, but rubbed out and allowed an hour or so to dry out it is cool, deeply caramel and stewed fruit sweet and just a little spicy with a bit of leather and coal tar towards the end of the bowl. Three cheers for Marlin Flake. HIP HIP..........

Haven't tried it yet. I am just getting my taste for VA blends and have a big TAD order coming with about 80% of the order being VA blends. Would love to try some. I have found Villager 1888 Mid-Day is a nice creamy fruity blend that begs to be smoked right out of the tin.

Marlin Flake is in my top 3. Unfortunately on my last TAD order it was out of stock. It has a very complex fruity taste that I simply love. I concur that prepping it is the key to success.

IMO... If you're a fan of VA's and haven't tried Rattray's blends you are missing out. I consider Marlin Flake, Hal O the Wynd, Brown Clunee, and Old Gowrie are all worthy of a place in my cellar.

Wow some high praise there guys. Glad I picked up some on my last trip to my local tobacconist. Have not opened it yet but the tin is 5 years old and was the last one. If it is as good as you all say I think I am in for a treat!

Well it looks like I may have to get some Marlin Flake with my Hal O the Wynd this week

Hal O the Wynd is my daily smoke.

Agreed with all Rattray's is a fine blender of Virgina tobacco, and responsible for my favorite HOTW. Although I have not had a bad blend they manufacture.

Its really funny that you bring this up. I wanted to try some of it here not too long ago and thankfully, pipesandcigars.com had some 50 gram tins in stock, so I snagged one to try it out. Your review makes me excited to try it, though I am curious to see what the age is on the tin that I receive. If it is aged a little bit I may have to crack it open and give it a try. Thanks!

So here I am smoking Marlin Flake for the first time. I just opened the tin today. The only cellar time it has on it is however long 4noggins had it on the self. I have been smoking VA's and VaPers almost exclusively for a little less than two years now. I have enjoyed most, but I see this one reaching the top of the go to list. I am really impressed at how it came in the tin. Five of the longest flakes I have ever seen. I held one up for the old lady to see, and she thought it was beef jerky. Pretty good stuff.

There are other companies making excellent VA flakes out there, but for my money, Rattray's produces three of the very best: Marlin Flake, Hal o' the Wynd, and Old Gowrie.

Ditto Bill. Marlin Flake has that perfect sweet/peppery taste that I love.
It's nothing like Marlin Flake but if you order often from 4noggins, you should get a few ounces of Prairie Wind. Its a nice cool smoke.

Jah, I got prairie wind as a sample from 4noggins just under two years ago. That was my first VaPer and has been on my table ever since. Prior to that I only smoked areo's. Thanks to that sample I realized that for a great tobacco you don't need a sweet over the top topping.
Right now my top three are Hal O' the Wynd, Prairie Wind, and Marlin Flake.
Also, the texture of the two Rattray Tobaccos I have tried are pretty nice. I'm not sure what it is but I like it.

Was on my list of "to buys" on my last order, but somehow forgot to include one to try out. Marlin Flake will DEFINITELY be on the next order and i am stoked to try it, especially after reading this thread. Also gonna have to try out HOTW and Old Gowrie. Thanks for the recommendations/reviews y'all!
