For me it's Scottish Cake > HotW...but I love both.

Have not tried Old Gowrie. Maybe I should.

Are Scottish Cake and Scottish Flake identical blends as far as taste?

I have tried a couple bowls of each over past couple days. I prefer OG. I am not sure if because it has less perique or more Kentucky, etc but both are good.. I need to try Halo.

I prefer Old Gowrie to Hal OTW. If I had to choose one blend to only smoke for the rest of my life, I would be fine with Old Gowrie. I have some Scottish flake to try this weekend.

Better than all these, to me, is HU Louisiana Broken.

But TBH it could pass for a VA flake if you weren't paying attention.
Which is why I like it so much.

But it wouldn't be the same without the KY and Perique -- they round out the profile but subtly. This one would be incomplete, even boring, without them, yet they don't make themselves known as distinct components unless you're looking.

I completely understand if others want to taste the KY more distinctly. In that case, my vote would be for McConnell Scottish. But I'm usually a VA flake guy, so to me the subtle use of KY in HU LA Broken is magic.

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve found I like my DFK and Perique to be a “side dish” rather than a light condiment to my Virginia, and prefer the base VA to lean towards dark away from bright.
Therefore sometimes looking to retain the brighter VA forward should look at my recommendation in reverse😉
