So with the recent spike in Navy threads I am curious to try some but I have a few questions.
1. Do they have a tendency to ghost pipes?
2. Though aromatics flavor doesn'the age well, does the tobacco? I opened a tin of Cherry My mixture from the 80's and the tobacco itself aged well. Just no flavor.
3. Considering it has rum in it, is it bad for your meerachaum.
I have smoked 3 tins of aros since pipe smoking and although I prefer non aros, the Nvy flake with rum topped are intriguing.

Yeah, I don't worry about ghosting, and rarely notice it, so take my words with a grain of salt... No, I haven't noticed any lingering flavors left from navy flakes. Hell, with PS Luxury Navy Flake, I can't even taste the rum when smoking it, let alone afterward.

Navy Flakes really aren't "aros"; they're topped, but usually with a pretty light hand. If you're concerned, just try them in one pipe and see.

I have very strong opinions concerning navy ghosts, but due to a legal settlement, I'm afraid I'm not able to share them.

I love ghosts.
Sometimes I'm smoking Old Dark Fired, for instance, and I get just the tiniest little whiff of Ennerdale...
Heaven!

Not to mention that some Navy Flakes have no rum at all such as Stokkebye's Luxury Navy Flake.
Eventually all twisted tobacco, and then pressed tobacco, became known as "Navy" "because of the convenience for sailors and outdoorsmen who favored its compact size "and long-lasting, slow-burning qualities."

Good find ChasingEmbers!
I'm tempted to post it here,

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/what-defines-the-navy-flake

as it concisely sums the issue all up so well!

I love Navy twists, ropes, flakes, and every other form just because it's like the sailors of old thought. Easy to carry, and a great smoke. I must admit though, that I do like the rum ones better, and for the OP, I've had no issue smoking them in meers.

This is just my opinion, but I think meers give you the real taste of a tobacco. Today Navy flake, tomorrow Vaper.
I've never noticed that ghosts cling to my meers.

1. Not in my experience.
2. *)'s? I think ageing helps many aromatics but not 16+ years worth.
3. No, unless your pouring it on your tobacco. I hear Condors toes curling if you do that.

Top coating is not dense enough to hurt the meer, from my limited experience anyway. I smoke Navy Flake in my meers among many other blends.
