I just opened a Peretti Paint Can I purchased 1 year ago (Cuban Mixture) and the tobacco is still at perfect moist. I generally jar/mylar once I open a tin but wondering if for the Peretti paint cans I can just keep in the cans as it looks they seal is thight.

Sorry for the typos. I just repost:

I put the paint can in a mylar bag for peace of mind. I like that paint can but I agree that once opened it is best to stay safe rather than sorry.

I still have a few of those paint cans of Somerset Slice going on 20 years old, now. Last time I opened one, about a couple of years ago, everything was fine and dandy inside, and I have no reason to think they won't last quite a few more years. Then, the tobacco was inside a plastic bag, inside of the can. Perhaps it is the same now. Also, I used silicone glue around the lid as a sealant, as a precautionary measure. Don't know if that made any difference.

I have two tins in the paint cans. They have the nice plastic bag that you can tie after use so that seems to keep the tobacco in good shape. I called LJ Peretti about this very topic and they shared a story. They found a paint can of tobacco that had been stuck on a back shelf for over 15 years and when they checked the tobacco, it was fine. I do move 2 oz to a small 8 oz mason jar for day to day smoking access so I don't have to open the paint tin until my small jar runs out.

I posted a similar question not too long ago. I contacted Peretti’s and they told me the paint cans should hold for up to 4 years. I’m sure that’s just a precautionary response and they may very well hold for longer. I opened a couple of 6 year old HU paint cans and their stuff was fine.

I have also had good luck with aging in the paint can. So far, every one that I have opened has been at perfect moisture.

I am pretty sure that unopened they age well without problems. The real question is once opened if they still keep the seal or not. Maybe opening just few times to take a couple of ounces every time might be ok but not sure. Maybe once opened I can put the can in a mylar bag for extra safety
