I have received 3 flakes the Full VA , 1792, and Chocolate.
So grateful for Jimlnks reviews as I always know at the end he’ll warn us of the ghost factor.

So upon reading I smoked the 1792 out of and old estate that I’d recently given the salt treatment. The chocolate out of a clay and the Full VA in a brand new Peterson.

Now though I’m recovering from Covid and my taste is still only at maybe 25% when it comes to the subtitles of tobacco I know I absolutely love these flakes. These are the tobaccos I’m going to stock up on and keep around as long as possible.

To the point, though there is no mention of ghost with the full VA, and Chocolate.
would it be wise dedicate pipes to these two too to maintain the consistent flavor or as long as I smoke them in my dedicated VA pipes , I should be fine.

Also once in a while I smoke Warhorse Bar , which contains some of the same same components as 1792 including the tonquin bean, should I give them separate pipes ? Or will the ghost be faint/similar enough to where it’s no big deal and it won’t ruin my experience with either.

After smoking 50 or so blends I’m finally figuring out what I like so I want to keep the tastes as pure as possible. I’m interested in how more experienced S&G smokers maintain the pure flavors of these beautiful flakes.

Thanks

The SG Chocolate Flake pretty much has zero chocolate, so no worries about that ghosting. I haven't had 1792. I used to have pipes dedicated to genres, but now I have enough that I have one just for most Gawith stuff and a separate one for heavy Lakeland blends like Ennerdale and similar. Pure enough for me! ;)

I am a big supporter of dedicating pipes to either genres like a Vaper or taking a pipe and smoking only one blend in it at all times.
For example I smoke my 2007 Stonehaven out of 2 of my Rad Davis Lovats. I smoke my 1998 Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky in 3 pipes. One is a Jack Howell Billiard, one is a Scott Thile Bulldog and one is a Rad Davis Billiard. I found these great combos and when I do I stick to them. If I run out of tobaccco I will repurpose a pipe and try and find another great combo.

So far I have had plenty of stock where I haven't had to repurpose a pipe just yet. I do have my vaper pipes, my Virginia pipes and my Virginia/Kentucky/Burley. I just remembered I have been smoking nothing but 2012 Mac Baren Old Dark Fired out of my Rad Davis Zulu for over 10 years.

I can picture some of you guys rolling your eyes and thinking this guy is a wack job, how does he get by in life. lol I would tend to agree I am a bit anal about my pipes and tobacco but I have fun doing things my way just as everyone else should have fun doing things their way.

Very often I mistakenly smoke a Lakeland in one of my straight Virginia pipes, but I have yet to have any issue with ghosting. Latakia might be another story.

Not too wide, not to narrow, not too large, not too small. Straight walls, or slightly conical. Something like a Dunhill 3 or 4 billiard would be close to optimal.

All of my pipes but a couple are group 4-5. I get normally get 1.5-2.0 hours per smoke. I am retired and a cripple so I have the time to smoke as much as I feel like. Here are my criteria for buying a flake pipe that I can clench and I get a nice long smoke.

Bowl Height 1.85-2.15
Inside bowl depth 1.4-1.75
Inside bowl width .75, 13/16.7/8 Percentage wise I have around 60 percent or so that are 13/16.
Shank dimensions 4.0-4.5mm
Weight 40-55 grams give or take depending on balance.
Pipe Length 5.00 to 6.5

I also make sure the walls of the pipe are not too thin. A well made pipe with thicker walls is not a big deal on the weight.
I don't pay attention to the inside bowl shape either. All of my pipes are classic shapes as that is what I enjoy.

I think ghosting might be a slightly exagerated problem, and the only ghost I have noticed is from latakia, which just seems to stink up the place. I think the flakes you have shouldn't be an issue - I've been mixing and matching all manner of Gawith flakes in the same pipe for a few weeks now, and not even the rose geranium has left it's mark.

Interesting , yeah I know via Pirate Kake that Lat bombs can ruin a few smokes for sure but a mean Burley can knock ‘em out after a few Bowls.

Had some captain blacks and 1Q when I first started smoking and those ghosted pretty bad in the case of going for a pure VA or Burley.

Main concen was the Tonquin Bean in the 1792 and keeping true to the taste of other various flakes.

When the next SG drop comes I’m gonna stock up on it all.
I’m not afraid of the dreaded “sauce“ but I don’t want to mix too much to where I’m never tasting what was intended to begin with…

No need to worry about that anymore. No where near as potent as it used to be.
Yeah I‘m glad I didn’t start earlier because I have a feeling I might have loved it and been even more bummed if that too went away.
I’m already heart broken over the Gauloises as I’ve stated too much.
Time to get over it ,appreciate all the wonderful Kendal flavors and smoke everything with Malawi in it From here on out…

I smoke mainly English and Balkan blends with latakia, which lingers, so I dedicate a few pipes to Virginia and Virginia Perique blends that I smoke as a change of pace, including Full Virginia Flake.

I smoked classic Gauloises Brunes consitently from 2013, and Gitanes for about 10 years before that. If we were still in the days of easy acces to them, and cheap cigarettes, I'd probably till be on atleast a pack a day. That said, I've found that I prefer pipe smoking since having to change over, and frankly, the Gauloises in the last few years just haven't been the same.

But, in my heart, I will alway be a Gauloises man. Their decline is the decline of civilization.

Only tobacco I smoke that has a dedicated pipe is Rattray‘s Exotic Orange, this stuff would ghost anything it’s near. I left a small bowl of this drying in my smoking cabinet 3/4 years ago and every time you walk past it you can still smell the rich aroma
SG’s are good to cross over and won’t ? imo.
