After the last pipe I bought, said I wasn't going to buy anymore. However, now my wife is talking about us exchanging X-mas gifts this year-we only occasionally do that owing to putting most of or X-mas $ toward adult kids and grandkids every year. So, now am thinking about a Peterson shape that appeals to me which I don't have. What I'm interested in is only available in the Killarney line. Never beheld that line in-person. Am a little leery about how the red stain would look in person as I'm not typically big on anything other than brown or black. So, is it a deep, dark red? Wouldn't be bad then. How's the finish? thanks.

The ones I have handled are more a rich mahogany color.. Some were much darker then others. I have a b16 that's a good smoke and has a nice hefty feel to it.

I have two Killarney, a Rhodesian 999 with a P-lip stem and an ebony bent brandy B-11. The stain on the 999 is about as deep a red as I've seen. I'd recommend a fishtail rather than a P-llp, in general, but that's a personal choice. I like my 999 fine, but would order a fishtail stem if I ordered another. All this said, I have had a good experience with Petersons, no quality control problems, no stain in the stem or bowls, no other quality control issues. There have been some complaints on Forums about Petersons. But based on my experience, I can recommend the Killarney series, and the stain on my 999 is deep red. Don't be afraid to phone the online retailers and ask about the current pipes offered, and their coloring, and if it matches the photos online. Even smokingpipes.com, which photographs the actual pipe, might have a photo that shows the stain brighter or darker than it looks in person, just the variables of photography and online visuals. I would also look over selections of Savinelli, Stanwell, and Nording, for dependable brands you might like. And if you "accumulate" a few more pipes, I'd branch out a little from dark brown and black; you can still keep it conservative. There are plenty of pleasing other options.

Thanks for the info gents. Sounds like this might just do the trick. I wasn't looking to add any more pipes, but, if my wife is offering, who am I to argue.
