I was reminded about a bill that passed the US House of Representatives last year that would have banned flavored tobacco. Massachusetts already has such a law. So my question is what would be the best way to stock some aromatic tobacco for really long term (20+ years)? Would bulk in mason jars last longer, or would those 12-14 ounce cans fare better? Wondering if I should buy some cans of Captain Black to set aside for my old age.

P.S. Yes, I smoke non-aromatics as well, and have a decent amount in mason jars, so "Just smoke English blends" really isn't an answer to this question.

I would vacuum seal them, then put those bags into a food grade bucket. Jars are sometimes a little inconvenient.

People will say that it won't age without air, but a) its an aromatic, and b) most oxidation is by hydrolysis, so air isn't actually necessary.

An overkill method would be to use food grade buckets, purged with CO2.

I smoke so gradually, I might say my whole stash is hoarding against prohibition, although it is very modest by Forums standards, no wall of tins here. Notable variety though. Jars, tins, bags, pouches, tubs, in numerous genres and cuts.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Life is too short to worry about all the things that could go wrong. You could get your nice big order of aromatics the same day a tree falls on your head. Or worse you could lose your taste for aros and have a bunch of tobacco that is worth too much money to smoke and then one of the desperate forum members botches their robbery attempt and things go bad.... Better just to roll with things as they come. :)

If you want to really make sure they’re safe invest in a chefs vacuum sealer. They use them for sealing meat in plastic bags to cook slowly in a water bath. This will ensure no moulds can grow. After you can sell it on eBay, heat treat and case your own blends or start cooking more meat. It’s a win win situation.

There is a risk in aging aromatics that the added flavorings will go "off" over time. I've aged Mac Baren Vanilla Cream up to about 8 years and its fine, the Virginias get smoother and the vanilla, though it fades, is still nice.
It seems to age faster in the sealed bags (still with air) than in the sealed tins.
This is a good place to ask if others have experience in aging what you want to age. I've got some 1-Q that is several years old and still fine (seems like the 1-Q would keep forever).

I haved loaded up on the only 2 aromatics that are worth talking about. I have Cult Blood Red Moon and Sutliff Molto Dolce. All the others are not worthy to be discussed. I loaded up on these 2 and when they are going to 150-500.00 a tin you may bow down to my greatness and I expect a 10 percent commission. If you fail to pay, I will be sending Al, one of our great moderators. Don't mess with Al, he will run you over with his GBD.

Some good suggestions here. Who knows if they will ban all flavored tobacco or just certain ones, plus we don't know for sure which blends are on the chopping block so it might b a good idea to stock up on a few favorites. There are a TON of aro options and would recommend a wide variety so you don't get tired of it or if tastes change.
