I wanted to realize something similar to a Rhodesian or an Eskimo. Among my briar blocks I found a piece that could be rigth for my aim, but big enough to obtain another pipe from it that soon got the priority.

Here are the two drafts, already drilled, put in their starting position:

I was thinking to carve the second piece in a standing shape

but the shapes I visualized were too bulky for my taste. So I changed direction and started a different style:

Soon I'll show the progress of the work

As someone with zero wood working ability, I really appreciate this thread and your sharing of your start. Thanks very much and I hope you continue posting your progress.

Two pictures of the progress:

In the second picture the pipe is almost ended. Sanded with 220 grit. Some small modification and then staining. Ichoosed a dark colour cause, as you can see, the briar have some flaw.

I'm waiting the paint dries and soon i'll show the final look.

I think the grain came up nicely, especially in the "overexposed" photos. Your dog looks quite impressed too; we share the moment.

Wicked looking pipe. It looks like something Gandalf would carry for casual social engagements...
