I'm making my own pipe and I was wondering if yall could give me some web links that show the process of applying stains to your pipe? Or you could just give me the low down. I'm confused on why you apply stain and then sand it off and apply more stain.

The short course- sand to 600 grit. Stain with Fiebings Leather dye.Get a beer. Go back to 320 to sand all the scratches you missed the first time that you can now see since you stained the pipe. After you've spent about 45 minutes drinking beer and sanding with the 320, get another beer...Sand another 45 minutes with 600. Stain again...Sand with the 600 until you see some nice highlights. Get another beer...Sand with 800 for 45 minutes...Get another beer...Get a cheap buffer with some buffing compound and run it on a drill if you have one handy. Assuming that in your somewhat inebriated state you haven't managed to throw the stummel across the room and destroy it, apply some Carnauba wax with a clean buff...Stick a stem in the sucker, fill it with Stonehaven, pour another beer and enjoy....:)
