When i am holding the pipe with my hand i can get good sized puffs because i can use my cheek muscles to help puff (like a boooooo motion with your lips while inhaling). but when i put the pipe in my back teeth to be held, i cant use my cheek muscles. i find that i can hardly get a puff while holding with my teeth. i don't inhale past my mouth.
any suggestions. sorry if its had to understand. its hard to explain.

Hey Hellar I think it is clearly explained. I tend to clinch with my back molars on the right side and then puffing like normal. However, it could depend on the weight of the pipe. The pipes I use are very very light and small. Furthermore, I don't know if I would recommend clenching all the time as it could lead to irritation to the gum or teeth and lead to dental problems. Just my two cents though.

It sounds like you may be puffing too hard and packing too tight. Try packing the tobacco a little looser.
Also try holding the pipe with your front side teeth instead of your back teeth.

If you follow the above instructions, you will find that it's easier to "sip" the smoke instead of puffing it....and sipping really is a lot better.

Ah, just the opposite advise than me Bob haha. I tend to like clenching with my back teeth as I can still open my mouth and move my jaw a little. I don't know if I do it like most but I say experiment with it and see what is best for you. Who are we to tell you how to do things? If it works for you do it, if it doesn't then try something else. Hope this helps.

I think Bob is on the right track. There shouldn't be much resistance to your puff.
I don't think my cheeks move at all, more like normal breathing.

You need an "EXPAND-A-LUNG" cycling endurance breathing trainer. Its great for pipe smoking to. You'll go from barely being able to puff to teeth clenched mouth full of flavor in no time. If you train hard at it and keep at it and you'll get full blown emphazema in no time.

@ mlaug and hauntedmyst. wouldnt "breathing" or "expand-a-lung" cause you to inhale the smoke? i thought its not suppose to leave your mouth.

I didn't mean to imply the smoke was inhaled, only that the puff should be "breathe-like". I didn't mean to confuse.

Dang it!!!!!! I never thought once about how to puff,.....now you got me trying to analize what I'm doing and I'm all screwed up!!

Now I can't even smoke my pipe, and I'm drooling!

I can't clench.
I own a St. Bernard and I can out drool him if I hold a pipe in my mouth.
It isn't pretty.
As for puffing...just let nature take it course.

It's all in the tongue. And you're right; the more you think about it the less it works.

The only time I schmoke a pipe hands free is when I am doing woodworking or putzing around in the garage. I only schmoke cobs hands free as they are light and if I drop it, no great loss.
