A long time ago, I bought a few blocks of black walnut. One of them I carved into a pipe for an ex of mine, who was into smoking alternative substances. The rest have sat in a bin for the past three years.
I found the wood again on sunday, and figured I'd take on a new project. Could I carve myself a serviceable tobacco pipe, using only my Buck 110 and a Milwaukee drill for the chamber and stummel?
I drew the template on the block and set to carving. I figured a straight bulldog would be easiest to do. I have a no-name estate I acquired from a member to compare against, and possibly to donate the stem. Wish me luck, and I will post pictures of my progress.

BnB, it's presently a hunk of walnut with very little curvature in it and a gleam in my eye. If you've ever tried to whittle hardwood with your EDC knife you'll know what I'm in for.

I think it's worth doing. Just put yourself fully into it. Let everything else fade away, light a pipe, and enjoy making it. I remember watching men whittle pipes on the front of a general store in my great grandparents small small town. It's a worthy endeavor, and it'll give you an appreciation for the work of skilled pipe makers no matter how it turns out.
I look forward to seeing it.

I've thought of doing this, using a long block of wood - no rubber stem, just one solid piece of wood...
... maybe someday. Corncobs are pretty darn convenient.
Would make quite the heirloom though.
Now, do I go about finding a suitable long block of wood and join you... Hmmph.

Good luck ! I carry a 110 on my belt every day, and I make pipes every day. I wouldn't want to combine the two personally! Making pipes is pretty hard even with the right power tools.

I promise you will have fun though, just don't cut off anything you will regret later!

A couple wood rasps would still be considered old school and would be MUCH easier than just an knife. Just sayin...
