There are a lot of Match blends out there that are designed after both existing and extinct pipe blends. Some are great and some...suck! I'm curious why nobody has developed a Match bend for Unicorns such as Penzance, some McClellands (Frog Morton, etc.) some Germains & SG/GH. Maybe Russ runs across this and considers a new project...!

With McClelland's (I'm just parroting here) basically you just can't get those tobaccos anymore. With McClelland's & the Gawith enterprise(s), there are also some proprietary secrets that have not as of yet been duplicated by others.

Penzance at regular price could probably be considered a unicorn but it's readily available at a premium price.

Now I don't think it was ever meant to be a match blend but if you pack a bowl of Balkan Supreme well and smoke at slow and cool rate it's awfully dang close. I'd give the edge to Penzance which, to me, is a bit creamier and smoother but that's about the only advantage it has.

Farmers have been doing it for years. Ever notice how early Penzance bags were tan instead of gold??

McClelland's used to suposibly use some leaf that was pre aged for a period of time and was pretty unique according to those lucky enough to have been able to try it. This might account for the lack of "Match" blends for certain tobacco, although there are Frog Morton replicas out there if you look hard enough.

As for regular "Match" blends most of them are excellent IMO. Have tried about 85% of the ones currently offered at P&C and the only one I wasn't impressed with is Brindley"s Mixture, although I havent had many bowls, it had that typical PG goopy texture and lacked flavor compared to other Match Blends. As for currently available Match blends check out Edgeworth Ready Rubbed, Sugar Barrel, Holiday Mixture, Troost, Sail, etc. For the price they are VERY good IMO.
