I have read extensively that post 1984 cadogan pipes are far less thought of as the pre cadogan pipes. I happen to own examples of both and find all are good smokers. Is the briar after 1984 poorer in quality? or hand made vs machine made? I find no literature that defines exactly why the post cadogan pipes are so inferior. snobbery? or fact? Orwellian? Any info is apreciated.

Comparing a pre-Cadogan made GBD with one made in 2009 you find that the quality of the later pipe is of a lower standard (fills/imperfections in briar/stem which GBD pre-Cadogan would have made 2nd) than that of the pre-Cadogan pipes. It could be that after the merger a new source for briar was used resulting in the drop in quality

I guess all of the GBD pipes I've bought are post Cadogan since I started buying them in about 1971. I've attached a very confusing diagram of the ownership of GBD. I must say that all of mine a good smokers so I guess its in the eye of the beholder.
