Has anybody here tried these and are they any good?

Apart from looking pretty futuristic and being expensive are they actually a good smoke or just a showpiece?

I'd love one but only if they actually work well.

I've seen a few of these at pipe shows, and in my opinion they're show pieces; factory pipes with the Porsche name.
Also, keep in mind that Porsche Design is the maker of watches, pens, cuff links and (in this case) pipes. These are not car designers (though they're owned by the same people).

I have a collection of both those made in the 80's and the current production. They all smoke very well and have held up well over the years. In the late 80's they could still be purchased at the Porsche auto dealer, now only at pipe shops and internet, I think. If you are a pipe smoking Porsche fan, they are a great addition to your collection of Porsche stuff.
The pipes were designed by "Butzi" Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand (VW bug designer), son of Ferry (356 designer). Butzi designed the original 911 Porsche, and then went on to found the "Porsche Design" company that has its own line of products, including lighters and ashtrays, of high end personal products, and also designs for other companies.

knowing porches reputation for quality, I'm sure they are made from good briar and engineered fairly well. I would tend to think that all those rings would increase the surface area of the briar in contact with cool air and hence keep the bowl cool.

They're better than Dunhills. Dunhill only made accessoires for car owners. Porsche even makes excellent low-maintenance sports cars! As you see, brand names say nothing but if you like the design go for it. It definitely compliments to a Porsche, though.

I had one of them from the 80's and I'd put it in the show category. The one I had smoked hot and didn't taste particularly good. It didn't taste particularly bad but nothing seemed to smoke well in it. The fins did nothing to cool it or at least nothing perceptibly to cool it since it often smoked so hot I couldn't hold it for long.

It's entirely a show-piece for Porsche drivers/fans. Like the cufflinks, sweaters, ties and various other things that cost too much. I honestly wouldn't want to own one of those.
