It's tough to defend a guy who swept the offenses against the you boys under the rug. He was a good man who committed the folly of protecting the church at the expense of the people under his care.
The man wasn't perfect, however, if you cut through what most of the media shovels out, he did more to combat it than pretty much any modern Pope, including JP2 and Francis. It is extremely difficult to root out/discern truth from falsehoods when such a large portion of the Church is corrupt and actively working against you as Pope. There has actually been a great amount of headway made in combating abuse in the Church. Most 3rd party investigative organizations now put the Catholic Church light years ahead of most Protestant denominations and public systems (schools, government, etc) in fighting it. The only reason public schools haven't been taken to task over it is because they are an extension of the government.

And yes, I am somewhat partial being Catholic, however, there is much more to it than what you will see on the evening news and in the papers.

Let's keep it to RIP. Don't want RIP end up getting locked up. Beside, the guy justed died. Let's wait at least 3 days before bringing all the dirty laundries out.
He died more than three days ago. Last year, technically.

Also, as a Catholic I must say that OUR dirty laundry is to be washed at home, and not in a public forum in full view of unbelievers.

Being Catholic myself I say this was a bad time in the church and they that have to get busy cleaning it up. I really don't care where they do it, but a public cleansing is what you need.
