Polishing Nickel Pipe Bands

What is best for polishing the nickel band on a pipe?

I usually use a buffing wheel, but toothpast on a Q-tip works pretty good too.

Toothpaste on a Q-tip sounds low-tech, immediately at hand, and, by your recommendation,
