Like Australian Shepherds, Louisiana Catahoula's can have the genetic trait for mismatched eye colors. Whether matched eyes or not the common eye colors are brown, Amber, Hazel green, blue (sometimes called glass eyes) and black. Catahoula's can also be born with one or both eyes "cracked" which is an eye with two or more colors. It may just be a wedge in the eye of a different color. I personally have never seen one with cracked eyes. Eye color can change anytime within about the first 10 days of life. I had 3rd pick of the litter with Traveller and when her eyes opened she was born with two blue eyes. When I went back to get her at 6 wks one eye had turned Hazel Green.
The breed is only about 500 yrs old and all purebred Catahoula's come from just 5 genetic lines. Brad has said that Ki and PMon both came from the Don Abney line. Cochise and Traveller came from the TXCAT line. My first one, Chiricahua Jack was a mixed breed most likely with a red hound.

I should let Brad answer some of this since it is his thread. Louisiana Catahoula's are great dogs. They have fully webbed digits out almost to the end on their paws; much more so than a Labrador Retriever. It helps them navigate the swamps in Louisiana. As a result most of them love the water. Since I spend a lot of time with my dogs in an outdoors environment I always have the dew claws removed by my DVM while they are under the general anesthetic and being neutered or spayed.
Traveller has spent about 20-25 days with me in my canoe and 8 days in a kayak, over these first two summers of her life. This past summer she learned how to dive and remount a dog platform on the side of my duck boat. The only thing one needs to be aware of is that Catahoula's are a short hair with only one coat, so I never use her in cold water.
They are typically used as hog dogs & cattle dogs. Cochise was a great quail dog. Not many quail around here anymore but Traveller is now gun trained and trained to squirrel hunt, plus she rounds up my free range chickens whenever I take her to the farm.
They are very smart, learn quickly from routine but can be stubborn & a battle of wills sometimes.

Thank you fellows for the compliment. Traveller is a beautiful Catahoula. Ki my first was more docile than PMon, saying that I have seen Ki bring down a 2000 lb steer that was CHARGEING me, he ran, jumped and bit him on the nose, twisted and brought him down bawling and cowering. They have no fear. PMon is contrary , wife says he's more like me than Ki was. He is always by my side, Johnny PMon is 32 months old, My son just bought a Great Dane, it's gonna be interesting how they will get along. I have a little coulee by my farmhouse, to you Yanks, Coulee is a little stream., he's always slipping off roll in the water and mud. Loves the hose, in winter not so much as Johnny says they are a short hair Breed. Thanks again for the kind words. Eric, he says hello to Babyface, wonderful looking friend.
These are what I call dogs. I don't belittle any companion animal that provides company, but I do like
a dog that can outrun me. I do admire PMon's credentials for not devouring the barn cats (or resident
cats). I grew up with a spaniel mix who liked to swim in the river through the ice, though he didn't
have enough fat on him to keep a hamster warm; he was all fire in the eyes.

Brad, PMon & the Great Dane should play together just fine I think. Great Danes are usually pretty playful & submissive. PMon will want to dominate so it will be a match made in heaven!
