My aging Mom well... uh, I'm having some issues with her. She texted me the other day that she somehow managed to drop her glasses in the toilet, and flush them! Needless to say the toilet is now clogged despite her telling me that the frames were "very thin". Is this something I can somehow dislodge with a snake? I would like to avoid paying a plumber $500 or whatever if I can manage on my own.

I would be concerned with dislodging from the current location to another, harder to get at, location downstream. For reference I had to have one of those toilet cleaners that hang off the side of the bowl fished out after it get flushed. Took a plumber about 10 minutes for $120, he used a snake that had a set of clamshells on the end to grasp it.

Oh, good point. I could just end up making the whole thing more expensive which would be my typical luck.

I knew this would have a use eventually.

Formerly known as toilet guard.

Are you hoping to retrieve the glasses or just get the toilet unclogged? The glasses might not have traveled very far and are just hooking toilet paper, creating a blockage. You might be able to reach in and pull the glasses out of the bottom of the bowl before the turn down where the wax seal would be.

I don't care about the glasses. I believe they were already broken or something so I am just looking to unclog the toilet. I think I'll buy a snake with a grabber although I never managed to hook a stuffed teddy bear for my bea.

Yeah just turn the water valve off, disconnect it, unscrew the bottom floor bolts and lift the toilet off. Hopefully the glasses are sitting there in the bottom of the toilet.

Yup. Pull the toilet. Any monkey can do it. Replace the wax ring while it’s off.

Shop vac.. Suck the glasses out. I was a maintenance man in the projects for a couple years. I had a shop vac that was designated as the toilet vac.. I pulled out toothbrushes, spiderman, turds, anything you could thing of with that trusty vaccum.

This.

Takes 20-30 minutes to replace a wax seal and gives you the opportunity to inspect and if necessary replace the flange. I replaced the wax with silicone a few years back, it lasts years longer.
