Hello, I just found a pipe that my grandpa stored, I don't really know much about pipes and would like to ask for a valuation of the pipe and its pipe case.

Here are images:

Thanks a lot in advance

Really nice.

Can't place a value, but I will take any chance to say,

"Slave to the White goddess"

A treasure regardless

I'm not a Meerschaum owner or collector. This looks like a good quality pipe, and apparently it's fifty plus years old, if your grandfather stored it. I don't think it is especially valuable. The shape, stem and case are standard. It hasn't been smoked that much. I would guess you might get fifty to one hundred dollars on ebay from the right bidder, but it could be less. Some of our members who specialize in Meerschaum may see something else there that would make the pipe more valuable. My guess is that you should keep this as a family heirloom and don't look for much from a sale.

You should have at least one Meerschaum

Seriously, at least one

I am at 4 which will suffice for now.

Pipe looks to be from the the 20's or 30's but would need to see it taken apart to better guess. The pipe looks to be worth about $50
JackSwilling, I have right about 30 Meerschaums.....you're right. Four is enough.

"Slave to the White goddess"

Thank you

I never said I aspire to a ceiling of 4

Just the current reality

jacks', I think Meerschaums are noble piping institution. I just don't want to dive into another PAD. I'm trying to keep all my briars, cobs, and a few other woods in the game.

thanks for refencing me to the "slave to the white goddes" article, will read it for sure. As for keeping the pipe, we are not really family of smokers so I guess i would be more looking into selling the pipe.

Thanks for all the answers :)

I just noticed that there has been "329" written in the top of it, I don't know if it could mean anything or not, but I think it's better to mention it.

PS: I tried editing my last entry to contain this, but the system didn't allow me to do so.

stepanex, if you are inclined to smoke the pipe, I think it would smoke very well. Even if you are not a regular pipe smoker, you might like to smoke an annual bowl or two on your grandfather's birthday. Tobacco stored in a sealed canning jar should do fine between smokes.

I was going to say $60. High local cost of living has distorted my sense of value.
Consider hanging onto it for a while. You may regret getting rid of it someday.

I'd have to agree $50-60 now is nothing compared to the potential sentimentality.
Do try, even if only once before you sell, to sit down and smoke it, and try to imagine him doing the same.
I wish I had items from my own grandfather.
Beautiful pipe, by the way.

The problem with no name Meers like that one is that they are a dime a dozen. I just looked and as an example, there are over 6,000 meerschaum's listed on eBay right now. I go to 4-5 pipe shows a year and pipes like that one sit on tables for $20 and don't sell. I wish I could tell you that you have a rare old Meer, but it's a plain vanilla piece, albeit a nice one.

Well, I probably will try to smoke it with my dad but iirc the relationship of my family with my grandpa was not that good.

The weird thing that I just noticed about the pipe is that the mouthpiece is slightly rotated and spare mouthpiece is rotated by like 90 degrees. Could it be somehow fixed?
ophiuchus: Do you think it will increase in value or should I keep it just to have at least one pipe?
Once again, thanks for all the replies, they are highly appreciated.

Pipes like this don't appreciate in value significantly over time, but to have a pipe in hand could be invaluable down the road. If you never pick up pipe smoking, it's an interesting old piece of ornamentation for the mantle. If you do decide to pick up some tobacco down the road, hey, look, you've got your first pipe already. :puffy:

I would say that you could get around $40-50 easily, and if you were to get lucky and find a couple people interested in it you might get up to $75 with a good bidding war. I would be willing to pay up to $50 for that pipe. It's really nice looking.

Have you considered passing it onto your own children/grandchildren as a family keepsake. If you don't intend to smoke it and its value is as low as suggested perhaps that might be the best route?
Regards,
Jay.

I inherited a few pipes of my grandfather's that are beyond repair, but I've kept them for sentimental value and as a curiosity to have out in my pipe area. However, I had a close and positive relationship with my grandparent, so that makes it special to me. If you have no sentimental attachment--I'm sure you could sell it and get a nice little bit of pocket change, maybe take the family out for a lunch or coffee.
Echt bernstein is "real amber" (pipe stem). It looks very nicely proportioned and has a pleasant simple aesthetic. It's a nice old pipe.
