Title edited for capitalization and clarity.

Back in the '60s I used to smoke Sail yellow as a change of pace blend. It had a rich, nutty and smooth flavor that I loved very much. I want away in the military for several years and couldn't get it and in time I kind of forgot about it.

A few years ago I bought a pouch and gave it a try. What a huge disappointment that was. Rough and nasty smoke. Nothing like it used to be. So, the point of this thread is this. Do any of you guys know of a Cavendish that smokes like the "old" Sail? Thanks.

Hard to find things like those old Dutch cavendishes. You might enjoy Stokkebye Natural Dutch Cavendish.
Another thought might be to take a pouch of the current Sail yellow and let it sit for 6 months to see if that smooths it out at all.
Good luck.

Never had the old Sail, so I can't compare, but PS Black Cavendish 201 is a pleasant, tasty bulk Cavendish that's good by itself or for mixing. I haven't tried it, but the bagged tobacco, Admiral's Choice, seems to be entirely Cavendish in different flavors. It's been around a long time, so I assume it is palatable, with some options available. Possibly nothing is going to precisely ring that chime, burnished by the years, but you can probably find several Cavendish blends that are satisfying.

Just smoked some fresh PS Natural Dutch Cavendish -- for the first time in 4 years -- and I think it is pretty close to the ideal "natural tobacco" flavor you can get (though I'm sure it has some topping to give it some sweetness and that raisiny/plummy quality) and quite smooth. That said, I have no idea how it compares to Sail tobacco as I've never tried that.

But I can say this: my wife declares that it reminds her (in smell and taste: I'm the only one smoking it, haha) of the smell of the hand-rolled cigarettes smoked by a Dutch missionary she knew growing up in Kenya. I'd say that's a pretty good endorsement.

In any case, I highly recommend PS Natural Dutch Cavendish ... especially on St. Nicholas' Day!
