Can someone please go into depths as to what "Lakeland" means?
I have looked for a definition of this and I have found various thoughts as to what this means but nothing I feel I can put a finger on. Couldn't even find any mention of it on Pipedia.
Is it a type/flavor/treatment? Is it only from a certain region? Are all baccy's from that region Lakeland?

SG and GH are the two companies most famous for Lakeland tobaccos. The Lakeland essence is just a casing like any other, similar to any rum casing. The taste of that essence in my opinion is over powering and that is all I tasted when sampling a couple of those types of blends. I am not a fan of soapy flowers in my tobacco, but there are tons of people out there who love it. It is a unique flavoring and everyone really should try it just to see if it is something they like. Remember what tastes like soapy flowers to me could taste like nectar of the Gods to you.

Thanks guys to your replies. So I have some follow up questions.
1) Just to confirm. It is a topping applied to tobacco like any other aromatic topping?
2) Is "Lakeland" a consumer term/slang as I do not see "Lakeland" used to describe SG's or GH's blend on any websites?
3) How do I know something is a "Lakeland" blend? The only way I can tell so far is buy reading comments on forums or reading reviews.
4) Are there other companies besides SG and GH that make Lakelands?
(FYI, for the new guys - SG = Sam Gawith, GH = Gawith & Hoggarth)

SG and GH ar located in the Lake District or "Lakeland" in England, specifically in Kendal, home of Kendal Mint Cake!!
They tend to use that flowery soapy topping on their tobaccos or, in the case of tobacco like 1792 Flake, tonquin bean as a flavoring.

Eagle, you will have to look at review sites or ask people here to determine if a blend form SG or GH has the Lakeland essence. It is not something that they put on the tin.
Yes it is a topping like any other flavoring that is added to a blend.
I think there are other British mfgs that do use the essence, I think St Bruno is one and maybe Capstan, but I know those are not imported to the states.

Condor has a Lakeland essence, not generally available here, but I ordered some online through Mr. Snuff. Good stuff!

I smoked some Condor in my Storient and it ghosted the bejeezus out of it!It took a couple of rum soaked pipe cleaner cleanings and about 4 bowls of Latakia blends to get rid of the ghost. My advice is either dedicate a pipe or smoke it in a cob.

I totally agree about the ghosting. I used my Peretti billiard to try my Lakelands and I have not smoked out of it since. I just have not wanted to smoke however many bowls it takes to get the taste out of it. I am thinking of sending it in for an ozone treatment.

I've never smoked a lakeland to my knowledge, something tells me if I did I'd remember it, I did get a pipe once that was ghosted with what tasted like grandmas perfume on old cardboard...is this lakeland?

Is Peter Stokkebye's Golden Dansk a lakeland? I get that sorta thing from it, but comes off simular to flower petals which is actually quite nice.

I bought an estate Dunhill from across the pond. It must have been an English fellows Lakeland pipe. It was the grossest(to me) tasting pipe ever. Thanks to Bradley and his magic retort it is all gone now. More power to ya if you like the stuff but it is certainly not for me.

I do enjoy them, but have pipes dedicated to Lakeland blends

as they will no doubt ghost a pipe...but think about a blend

200 years old and what they had at that time for toppings and

casings...florals, toq bean, etc...so step back in time and give

them a try :)
Btw; when I first tried them...I said to myself..no way/really don't

understand the blends/flavors....in time I have come to really

enjoy them and 1792 is one of my favs now
