I just got back into smoking. Needed a pipe because what I had is long gone. Decided to try out a plastic model with a metal insert. I do plan on getting another one, but for now it was cheap and I don't really trust the wood the shop I went to had on hand. So far it smokes pretty decent and I like the shape (6" bent), but the jury is still out on durability and such. I was just wondering if any more experienced smokers have used these and what their thoughts were?

My girlfriend bought me a plastic pipe from Amazon. It sits in a very special place in my rack, and as far as she knows, it's too nice to smoke...
Just get a bag of Missouri Meerchaum cobs. Or just get one.
Plastic pipes are for sticking in Frosty the Snowman's mouth. They are not for smoking.
Cobs are just as cheap, and they give a great smoke.

This is essentially what I have. I figure if worse comes to worse I'll use the stem and carve one. I already did actually, but it started to crack. I'll explain about that more in the pipe building forum though.

Trash that plastic thing. Look at pipes from our sponsors. You'll be surprised how low a cost you can get a briar pipe for. Or order a few Missouri Meerschaum cobs. Not the cheap, made in China, gas station cobs. Be careful of alternative to briar woods. Some are unsafe to burn. Morta is fine, olive wood is fine, maple is fine, and pear wood is fine (although pear wood is not very durable from my experience).

Message taken, dump the trash. I'm pretty good when knowing about wood, I did a lot of research on different woods before I made my first attempt at carving a pipe, I ended up using cherry because it was local, and there was also a Michigan theme to it(cherry, copper furrel, antler bit). I know I have to stay away from walnut and pecan, although I don't believe the latter is used in pipes, I've seen the former.

Well, at least it looks nice!

I would probably be hesitant to actually smoke it but you never know. My concern would be the heat from the metal bowl causing toxins from the acrylic, as well as some new flavors!

I have a feeling that this wasn’t necessary designed with tobacco in mind.

You could always turn it into a planter.

Plastic pipes and metal bowl liners are both a really bad idea, and because they are inexpensive, called cheap, they are probably made of materials that shouldn't be exposed to heat. As I am one of the Forums inexpensive pipe guys, though I also have some pretty nice pipes, I can tell you there are a world of cob and briar pipes of good quality for under fifty bucks, cobs under thirty down to about five bucks. I would pitch that plastic item and start out right.

I can smell the plastic from here. I wouldn't suggest even exposing that to heat.
Don't feel bad. Nearly everyone makes a mistake or few when embarking on this trip.

But, but... what about plastic fantastic Nordings???

I ... can't ... BELIEVE Nording made something like that! If it had been eBay instead of TobaccoPipes, I would have thought that was fake.
Wow ... 8O

It's gone. I've smoked a pipe long ago and should have known better. Like I said though, I'm going to keep around the bit for a project, the main part is in the trash though.

I found my grandfather's old pipe from the mid-to-late 1950's and it was a no-name plastic pipe with a stinger and the bowl partially melted. I did not see a metal insert but the cake could be covering it up. The pipe is not smokable but I keep it for the sentimental value.
