Sometimes I see nice looking pipes on Ebay like Petersons and Dunhills but upon further investigation I discover the seller advises there are hairline cracks in the bowl or stem.
Question, 'Would any of you mates buy a pipe with flaws?'
Thanks,
Forrest

Not knowingly. If I knew how to repair them, then maybe, but I don't so I would shy away from them.

I would probably not buy a pipe with a hairline crack.
Putty fill is ok, it tells me that they discovered an irregularity while making the pipe.
However, a hairline crack tells me that the a crack, split happened after heat was introduces to the bowl.
Again, my opinion. Lot'sa pipes out there to be stuck with a cracked bowl.

Basically...no. I would have to assume that the seller is putting the best construction on the issue. When the seller says "slightly cracked" it means major issue....I think they will always minimize the problem to enhance its value to you....and then you find out how bad it really is when you get it home..... :(

Forrest, I consider them broken...and as I cannot fix them I will not buy them at any price.

I won't even consider a pipe with a cracked bowl. I will consider a cracked shank though if the pipe is a high grade and the shank doesn't have a piece broken away. One can usually pick them up for a song and there are many repairmen that can actually add to the looks of the pipe with a silver band and a little glue.

I guess I am in agreement with most people... A cracked shank (small crack, not missing sections) is something I could live with and/or get repaired, a cracked bowl is out of the question! If it was something like a Bo Nordh or a Sixten Ivarsson pipe, I might consider it. :D

I don't spend money on broken pipes. I'm sure a cracked shank is ok, but I just can't bring myself to spend money on a knowingly flawed pipe. I understand the logic of those who would buy a high grade for a low price due to an acceptable flaw, but I would rather buy a new reasonably priced pipe that smokes well. That's just me.

For me, I find it best to avoid Meerschaums with any cracks in the Block.

I can deal with cosmetic flaws and even a tight draft, but the fracture of

Block is not always something that can be repaired.
