In 2009 my sister gave me a great birthday present a 5220 Cumberland Dunhill. This was a $425.00 pipe one I could never afford. She purchased it from http://www.iwanries.com/

As soon as I received it I packed it and lighted it. I put it in my mouth and the bit and bowl disconnected. The pipe bowl fell off. Great pipe for $425.00.

I returned the pipe for repairs and they were OK, put the bowl and stem never fit correctly. I smoke it once and a while because it was the only Dunhill I owned.

I stopped smoking in 2012 and this pipe remained in my basement.

Go figure in 2016, I started smoking again, I figured at 73 what difference does it make. Today this 5220 Cumberland Dunhill is my best smoker.

ha ha, I've got a Radice bulldog like that. It wouldn't stay together when I got it, and then I tried to expand the tenon, but it kept shrinking back. I smoked it a few times, but it never lept off the rack as a frequent favorite, because of the fit issue. Then I needed a pipe that I could abuse by trying lakelands, so I started using it as a lakeland taster. And "tada!" It started getting a tight fit... but now it stinks like dead grandmas, ha ha. So it goes...

Talk about ups and downs. I would certainly be disappointed and disgusted with a "fine" pipe that fell apart in my hands like that. I'm glad you somehow got back to it, and stayed with it, after the bad experience. This illustrates what everyone knows, that the price on a pipe is far from the whole story. Good for you for persisting. Not so good for Dunhill.

Any pipe left too long in a dry state—such as in a heated and air-conditioned store— can have tenon slippage, no? But the fix is easy, though it takes some time and moisture.
