the heat is a problem you will face with aromatics its because of the casings try tamping the ash down more to control the heat. if you just want a different pipe i would suggests the MM freehand it is a think pipe can hold alot of your favorite toby and holds the heat very well. but i do still suggest tamping very often.

For me....I find it difficult to predict which pipe will smoke what kind of tobacco best. I'm glad some pipesters have found some predictable parameters to work with. But unfortunately my physiology, local climate, and prescribed medications etc have made this impossible for me. As soon as a find that a certain pipe does a certain job well I simply jot the info down and go where it tells me.... :?

I use a Savinelli filter pipe or corncob without a filter when I smoke aromatics and this seems to really help a lot. I am not sure why the cob works better, but I have yet to have a problem with aromatics when I smoke with them.

In the Louisiana heat and humidity, it doesn't seem to matter. Surprisingly though, my BC calabash, which is murder with anything else, smokes cool with 1Q.

Cobs or Meerschaums I've heard work best since aros seem to get rather gunky and you can keep those pipes cakeless and clean.

a cob, or a Cavicchi volcano.....low end or high end pipe choices, ask Lawrence to confirm this
Ok, I'll wade in...
For the most part I don't dedicate pipes... with one notable exception... My Uncle Arthur Tapered Apple... I like VaPers in it.
I like English blends in smaller bowls; the exception here being Sasieni Balkan. I checked my (copy/paste) Notepad Whatcha' Smokin' files to insure I'm not blowing smoke. I tend to smoke that in my Cavicchis more than other pipes... (fairly large bowls)
As for Aromatics I prefer larger bowls.
I have both medium and smaller sized bowled Churchwardens and I smoke what I feel like smoking in them either, VaPers, Aros, or English blends.
For me... the best way to smoke Aromatics is "low and slow". Low ember, and long slow puffs... The best practices must be in play where Aros are concerned... If you smoke them too fast, or pack them badly you end up with a hot and steamy smoke...

Not that hot and steamy is always a bad thing... but where pipes are concerned, not great.
Just my 2 cents.

Well you need a big ol Nording with a bowl big enough to stick your thumb down in it and wiggle it . And a big open draft . For some reason ARO does not like tight draws ,stingers and the like . All them extra chemicals need room to burn . Redneck Science . :laughat:

My '55 Kaywoodie loves aros, gunky or not. My Missouri Meerschaum Great Dane Egg smokes even the funky aros like a dream (as well as anything else). Say what you like about cobs, but they can be a hell of a good smoke and as another poster mentioned, they de-gunk pretty easy. I don't worry about the heat like I did before. It's gonna happen sometimes. Makes you appreciate the tabaks that smoke cool.

I just grab the pipe closest at hand stuff that puppy and fire up. I never use a filter and very rarely have a wet smoke.

A Peterson System pipe with the well/reservoir should keep your smoke dry. In the mid level price range.

For what it's worth I've always found that ribbon cut tobaccos which covers a lot of Aromatics and English blends smoke well in a larger diameter bowl. .8 inches and larger. The moisture problem may be due to the Propylene glycol that some aromatics have included. It's a humicant that keeps the tobacco from drying out and can make some tobacco downright wet. Like has already been mentioned, try to dry the tobacco out a bit and look at a filter or system pipe if all else fails.
