I am an ex-pro cyclist. We have a pretty big problem with saddles in cycling. especially between beginners and amateurs. how do you find a perfect saddle? they all are different and they behave differently on different roads, different types of training/race, different physique, different anatomy. Also the manufacturers making new models every year (better or worse than previous - it depends)...
what do we do? we have saddle exchange club.
I am looking at those enormous number of pipe types and I wonder.. how do you find that perfect pipe? especially when you get above £100 ? I mean even if you are a daughter of a millionaire - buying a dozen of £500 pipes and then using them as an exhibition of your mistakes somewhere in the hall of your mansion - doesn't seem like a good idea.
I understand that there is a complication of a pipe to be quite an intimate part which you have to trust enough to put it in your mouth..
But I am just wondering - did it ever crossed your minds guys? to open a club where people can exchange a pipe or two only to exchange them again few weeks later to someone else's pipe (for free or for small payment if they have different retail value)?

Welcome to the forum. I'm happy to say that "shaintiques" is way ahead of you. Check out his thread about Free Pipe Project.
I'm enjoying this bowl of Opus M too much to find the link for you.

'shaintiques' is the in house pipe exchange fellow. He operates an excellent program were we send him our spares, rejects etc and he cleans them up and sends them off to people who for whatever reason only have one or two pipes. Its a little like Obama Care but in the pipe community. I am busy enjoying a hybrid bowl of rope and Condor so you will excuse me if I follow my learned friend rangerearthpig example and leave you to discover the link yourself. On another subject welcome to the forum, its always nice to have more members.

I just had to suffer through an episode of some fairy tale show "Once Upon a Time" ... OMG what I wouldn't give to be out on the porch having a bowl of GLP Haddo's right now! Being a good husband involves great sacrifice!

Oh damn :) every time I come up with some idea then its already taken!!
like facebook which I invented in primary school.. JK :))
thanks for the link but I am in the UK so I wasn't going to benefit from the idea. I thought it might help other people (notably the US members as it seems you are majority here and hence will be much easier to run such a project).
Glad it works for some!
I am hoping to get my pipe and bunch of tobacco tomorrow.. mmmm :) So I will be busy sampling 35 different tobaccos I bought :-P

I'm new, and call me slow here, but I read your post Maxima, and it sounds to me like the point was missed, and that your describing an exchange club, whereby as a member of this club one would smoke out of a pipe or pipes for a few weeks to try them out and then send them in to the club where they would send you another pipe, or pipes that someone else had smoked and tried and you smoke out of them for a few weeks and then exchange them again.. etc.. etc.. and everyone else in the club is doing the same and everyone is smoking everyones pipes to try them all out so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of all great pipes ... is this correct?
I don't think that would work, for a multitude of reasons. While most all of us smoke estate or "used" pipes, they are cleaned and sanitized, and this takes time and effort. Moreover there is still an intimate relationship with a pipe, IMO, that supersedes most everything else. They are in fact very personal, and I don't think the pipe is so readily "exchanged" easily. But, the most important thing missed would be the chase my friend... that thing that keeps the PAD flowing through our veins. The chase for the perfect pipe to smoke.. or perhaps that perfect pipe for our collection, or just that perfect evening pipe, it's all part of it. It's a package deal my friend.. you get to choose the pipe and smoke it too!
