I received a bunch of Pipes and Cigars' "Match" blends last week. These are their mixtures intended to mimic name brand and discontinued pipe blends.
Barking Dog, Briggs Mixture, and Country Doctor were a little before my time, but the P&C knock-offs aren't bad. The Crown Achievement, and the Dunhill EMP, London Mixture, and Nightcap are pretty good. For the price per ounce, they're even better.
Has anyone else tried these Match blends?

Match blends don't always match completely, but if they are well crafted blends in themselves, who really cares?

They are inspired by successful blends, and if they are well put together, they can be a whole new treat. And if

they do match, that's good too. C&D Epiphany is done on the theme of Revelation, which I've never smoked, but

Epiphany is a nicely done blend in its own right. Just one example.

I've tried most of the Match blends and most of the originals, and am working on a thread of comparing the Matches to the originals. Some are close, a few are not. Sparks may not think ERR Match is close to the original, but I and many others do. Guess that makes for variety of opinion.
Considering that Sutliff doesn't have the original formulas and obviously can't use the same tobaccos, the fact that many are as close as they are is pretty good. A few of my reviews of Match blends are at TR.com, but I should have about 40 when I post them. I also know of three more to come, but can't talk about them.

I agree with MSO that even if they're not a perfect match, they are pretty good in their own right. To check out some other match blends go to Milan's site, were you will also find a variety of match blends, some the same as P&C, some different, including a very good Walnut. By the way, I understand that they are all made by Sutliff.

I haven't had the matches but I did smoke the originals. I always that that Barking Dog and Country Doctor were pretty good. Briggs, to me, was just a nothing burley really intended for mixing with other blends. I did play a very small part in the reintroduction of Crown Achievement and find it to be a very nice Balkan. When I was buying it back in the 1970's it was about 3-4 times the cost of other Lane blends.
