Why is there no tv show on the history channel about pipes? It could totally be set up like pawn stars and I would watch it.

Smoking tobacco has become socially unacceptable, and helps movies to become "R" rated. Today's public would likely shoot down any kind of tobacco related television programming as it may corrupt the youth. Save the children!

Several shows about the history of narcotics are completely acceptable, though. Everyone knows drug use has never hurt children.

Isn't that the truth. A movie documentary on the pipe called "Father of the Flame", which featured Lee Von Erck, was in the works, but haven't heard anything about it in some time.

No joke...
Several years ago, there was so much drama at our cigar shop that we seriously contemplated installing cameras to record it all. We talked about shopping it to the networks as a reality show, and we could have quite easily has enough material for three seasons.
Lost opportunities suck.

I can't imagine there would be a lot of general interest*, but it would make for a good indie project for someone with the right combination of resources, talent, knowledge, and heart.
It ain't me!
*Edit; unless you can find a way to squeak in gratuitous violence or sex...

I had a feeling those guys were con men. A year ago, it was already old news, and now, it's one of those projects that ended up in the back of the refrigerator all covered in mold and hair. I threw money at them, and now they are meatcake. Phhht, it didn't take this long for them to film Roots.
Yeh, I could see a a series based on a tobacconist, with all one-thousand of us huddled around our TV's watching it. :puffy:

I would enjoy such a series, but with such a social faux pas over smoking anything other than marijuana in today's world, I would bet that the only positive media attention that our hobby will see will be thanks to Quentin Tarintino.

Oddly, many reality so-called shows that shouldn't work, do. The ones least likely to succeed are often the biggest. The public health community would have endless litters of kittens if such a show about pipes took hold, but if people were fascinated with the characters (and that's the real point) no one could stop it. I can't watch four minutes of the Kardashians, however they spell their name, but the rest of the world is riveted for life. So if tobacco pipes were it this year -- with some charismatic old geezers and some young turks storming about the shop, and their wives and girlfriends -- it would either drop like a stone or become mandatory watching forever.

They have "Wife Swap," Why not "Pipe Swap?" You would think it would be much more socially acceptable, wouldn't you?

I don't think it's a matter, or issue of how tobacco has become a taboo issue, which I understand. With that said, do you seriously think that some producer is going to take the time, effort and MONEY to produce a documentary about pipe smoking for what would be a relatively nonexistent audience! Ain't gonna happen, and understandably so.

For those interested in a very light-hearted book on the history of tobacco, I'd recommend Guillermo Cabrera-Infante's Holy Smoke. He was an essayist and humorist who wrote on wide-ranging topics.

"... I can't watch four minutes of the Kardashians..."
Weren't they an alien race on Star Trek: The Next Generation?
Indeed they were. And they're homeworld was a place where ALL men have gone before!
