I am mostly interested in brands rather than types. For example...
Look at this brand of pipe and you cant go wrong...
I purchased a Molina pipe. My first and currently only pipe. I love it.

Ya I get that. I am asking what the best is.
I am new to brands... what are some respected brands?

Welcome aboard Stumpyds8!

I'm partial to Nording, and Claudio Cavicchi.

But, as for starter pipes... You probably can't go wrong with a medium priced Peterson that catches your eye.

Or, a Johs pipe. I have one. It was reasonably priced and is of very good quality.

In my opinion, Peterson, Stanwell, Savinelli, and Nording offer the best bang-for-your-buck pipes. Neerup is also a good choice, from my experience.

Peterson, Stanwell, Nording, Savinelli, and Brigham are some good moderately priced pipes that have a good smoke to them!

Enjoy your new pipe!

You know I used to be concerned about brands until I got this F'ed up lookin garden pipe in with a lot of pipes. Turns out its one of my best smokers I reach for it more often than my savinelli, couple of aldo vellani etc etc. Remember a good name will usually mean a decent smoke but dont focus too hard on the name.

Hey mate and welcome!

You will get dozens of varying opinions on what is good, better and best, so for my 2 cents worth, these are my better smokers I have:
Several Brighams, MM Cobs, Savinelli, Hardcastle, Peterson, Lorenzo, 2 Loewes & Co., several other English mades (all great smokers), Meerschaum, 2 Mr. Brogs, and of course one of the best smokers in my opinion, a smokindragon custom cob.

Buy an Estate, from a reputable dealer. Smoking Pipes is a sponsor here and they have a great selection. For the money you get a lot more pipe. I suggest any of the English makers try and buy a pipe manufactured before the mid 70's, the early 1960's being a great period. Dunhill is the most famous, GBD is my favorite, Barling, Ashton, and Comoy are all great makers as well. For a great pipe, that will outlast you, Estate Briar is hard to beat.
If you want a new pipe try Randy Wiley, he makes about 1,000 pipes a year and produces some really great mid priced pipes.
There is nothing wrong with any of the suggestions listed above I just thought you might appreciate another way to look at purchasing pipes. For the money it is hard to purchase a better pipe, than vintage briar!

Luciano is one of the best in the lower price ranges imo. Savinelli is a great value too...I especially like the Sav Hercules series.

Hnryclay has a good point. I remember being a bit shy of "used" pipes in the beginning as well though.
Price range would indeed help. All the brands are already listed, so you got a good start there. If you want to go a little cheaper, try these famous makers second lines such as Duca Carlo, Leonessa, Roma, etc.
Good luck and welcome to the crazy world we live in ;-)

As far as price range, I paid about $60 or so for that Molina I smoke now...I would be fine with spending up tp $200.
All of those look nice from what I found online. I didnt really care for the looks of the Nording pipes. I will post a picture of mine sometime in the next couple of days... or here (if I can figure it out)

If you can spend $200 on a pipe, I think you should look at a hand made artisan pipe. Check out these guys:

Eric Heberling (EJH Pipes)

Andrew Peterson (Quad City Pipes)

Mark Tinsky (American Smoking Pipes)

Trevor Talbert

Russ Cook

Simeon Turner

Randy Wiley

Boswell

Kevin Arthur

Wayne Teipen
Just to name a few. A bit more expensive than something made in a factory, but I think the quality of materials, engineering and form is worth it.

I'm partial to Aldo Velani's myself. I do agree with hnryclay about estates. You can get some great deals going that route. Also, consider some of the makers on here, unclearthur, briarbird and thesmokingdragon, as well as others, turn out some very nice ones. :puffy:

Peterson, Wellington, Got to have at least one Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe in the rotation, Got to have an actual Meerschaum too: Altinok, IMP, Paykoc. Kaywoodies are available for fairly cheap used and many people love them. Maybe an old Dr. Grabow Omega (the new ones in the blister packs lack the quality of the older ones). If you have $300 and up you can probably try a Dunhill.

If you have $200, my advice is to buy several. Some different shapes as well. Helps you figure out what shape you like and start a rotation. Time enough later to buy a nice one in the shape your really like.

Can't go wrong with a Peterson or Savinelli. Butz-Choquin is pretty good as well. With a $200 budget I'd suggest getting a couple of pipes. Both Peterson and Savinelli have some pretty good $60-$80 pipes, so you could get two or three of them and still have money left to get more tobacco as well. Also don't forget you can pick up a couple of cobs pretty reasonably to give your briar a break every now and again.
