Hello Gentlemen,

How necessary is a pipe stand? I had always assumed that such a stand was for display and convenience's sake, but I recently read that a stand is needed to allow pipes' moisture to evaporate. So should I get one of these things? I had just been keeping my pipes, when not using them, in storage in a cedar cigar box.

I also store my pipes standing in a rack for the reason Sam mentioned, I'd like the pipe to dry out well. I also like the way pipes look when racked. This being said, if you can store your pipes in an area where they avoid direct sunlight you'll help reduce oxidization of your vulcanite stems.
Racks can be found fairly cheaply in eBay auctions of estate pipes, and in antique stores.
Best,
-- Pat

I've also seen some decent spice racks at thrift stores and yard sales that can make pretty decent pipe racks for a buck or two also (I'm cheap). But some free hands and sitters don't take well to them.
I tend to store my regular's upright in racks. Even the sitters. The missus doesn't like pipes scattered all over the liquor cabinet but she has no problem with my growing collection. As long as it's tidy.
Compromise.

Based on your input, gentlemen, I ordered a cherry stained 6-pipe rack from Amazon's. Not very expensive, but it looks like it will do the job. Thanks!

I've been meaning to ask how one inserts photos into a post, in particular how one uses a photo for a signature. The stand is very ordinary, very utilitarian, but rather attractive in its simplicity. I rather like simple.

Saprrowhawk: There is a thread on how to insert photos. Pretty easy. I just save a pic to my desktop. Then go to Home on PM. Got to Albums, Upload pictures, follow the dropdown box there to fill in all the blanks.
Once you got the photo on the PM site, just right click properties on the photo, highlight and save the file's location.
Return to your Reply thread and click on "IMG." Paste the file location and you are good to go.
It sounds complicated, but if I can do it, anyone can.
I'd read the post on posting photos first. There's good information in there to get you started.

Way to go on getting your first rack.
Mind you, I'm pretty sure that in short order you're going to be wishing it was a 12 pipe rack.

I believe it's necessary to store them in a rack tonthe bowls are kept down and it allows them to dry properly. It is also a handy way keep things neat and tidy. I posted pics of my rack and pipes just look around it's here.

I use a rack to let them dry, but also because I want to display them, not have them sitting in a drawer. Only 4 of my pipes sit in the drawer of the night stand I use for pipes/tobacco. And that is because 2 are meers that have cases, and I want to keep them cased, the other two are gourd calabashes, and I don't have a rack for them.

Frankly, I just like how a rack of pipes looks....
I like mine lined up in a row. I want to be able to see all of them. So, I sort of dislike the round racks, and the two-sided ones.
