So I have now been smoking pipes for about 3 months. My first pipe is a Baraccini billiard, I have another pipe as well a Savinelli billiard, but for some reason I prefer the Baraccini. I usually smoke one of the pipes two or three times in a day, and the next day I smoke the other pipe to let the first one rest. I don't think anything has changed about how I'm smoking but the Baraccini is smoking really hot all of the sudden. Like can't hold the bowl in my hand hot. Yesterday it was so hot that after I finished the bowl which takes me 45 min to an hour the wood around the draft hole was actually charred a little bit, I poked it with my czech tool, and a piece of the wood came off, so now the draft hole is a little wider. What could cause this pipe to suddenly start smoking so hot, and how can I fix it? I'm pretty attached to this pipe, and I'll be upset if I ruin it.

Dry your tobacco more, pack tighter, and slow your cadence even more. I know that new guys don't like to hear that. I was there where you are once also. But, slowing down is win win for you and the pipe. Slowing down to slight wisps of smoke, barely visible gives you more flavor, more nicotine absorption, and a cooler pipe that will cake faster. Smoke big puffs of smoke, and you're just smoking for affect, wasting tobacco to the wind, and will look like a newbie. Just my 0.02.

Thanks for the advice Cosmic, should I do anything about the draft hole? I thought about mixing up some pipe mud and trying to replace the piece that burnt off.

Excellent advice on the clay. I had never thought of that.
Perhaps every new pipe smoker should get a clay, they are cheap and would be very intstructive.

I wouldn't use pipe mud unless you absolutely have to. I would just watch it (draft hole). It's an option, but I personally feel that a pipe is never the same after the application of anything inside the chamber. This is not to say I haven't used pipe mud, but that I only do when absolutely necessary.
I do think the hot pipe issue sounds like packing and cadence. Play around with the two and see if it resolves itself? If not, there are pipes that just seem to burn hotter than others. I had a Cellini Freehand that burned hot all the time. I had to let that one go. It pained me at the time.

What I don't understand is that I never had this problem before, and I haven't changed anything about how I'm smoking.

Do you smoke the same blend in the pipe every time you smoke it? I don't smoke my pipes three times a day and then rest them. Try resting the pipe longer after each time you smoke it. I don't know; day on, day off, or something. It's hard to say what it is? Again, if you don't feel like it's something you're doing; it may be the pipe?

I don't smoke the same blend every time, I mostly smoke Frog Morton, and Irish flake, it was Irish flake I was smoking when it started getting hot, I packed it with the fold and stuff method...I at first thought it was just a one-time problem but I have smoked the pipe twice since then with Frog Morton both times, and it is still getting hot...Is it possible that I've been smoking too hot for the last three months, and I have somehow damaged the pipe?

I think you might be not packing it right and you maybe smoking to fast? Slow down on puffing too. Smoking a pipe is all about slowing down and enjoy life.

I don't know? Neither of the tobaccos you're smoking in it are known for smoking hot. If the draft hole chip is due to charring? You may have damaged it? It's hard to say without seeing it. I imagine it's alright? It may all go back to packing and cadence? I would not smoke your pipes three times a day on a regular basis. This may be a factor in the dilemma.

Sounds a little odd this problem. I do not think it is not resting the pipe. The old pipers smoked one pipe and one pipe only all the time. Yet they did not have this issue. The Sav does not have the heat issue yet your smoking it the same way with the same rest pattern. I am curious about the airway. If your airway is restricted that causees smoking faster with harder draws to kept the pipe lit. Obviously it could not be a total blockage. But there could be a small piece of tobacco or gunk in the stem or the shank that is restricting the draw enough to cause it to smoke hot. I would clean the heck out of both and see if that does not fix it.

Just for laughs, I have to admit I read this post title as Pipe Smoking Is Really Hot, expecting it to relate how young people were flocking to pipe shops. Wishful thinking, I guess.

I do think letting your pipe dry out more before using it again would help. Get a few more pipes and smoke each one once a day.

If he's smoking to the bottom enough to char the draft hole area, the pipe should be as dry as the desert, unless the tobacco is way too moist to begin with.
@ Robert- Wouldn't a very open draw tend to make the pipe smoker faster, hotter, all other things being equal? (noting they rarely are!)
@ Music- If the pipe gets quite hot in the middle of a smoke, put it down! Come back after it's cooled a bunch 5-15 minutes or so. When, how are you tamping? A gentle tamp can help slow things down along with a slower cadence and/or less pressure on the draw. What Cosmic and Ford said....
Happy piping!
PS- can you post a pic showing the draft hole?

Thanks for the help everyone I tried to get a picture of the draft hole but it is a really small chip that came out and I can't seem to get one that really shows it...I think the issue might be that I was smoking outside on a very windy day...can wind blowing across the top of the pipe make it smoke hot? Most of the time when I smoke I'm able to keep the outside of the pipe to where I can't tell a difference between when I'm smoking and when I'm not, if I start to feel any warmth I stop sipping for an extra few seconds, and that is usually enough for it to cool back down...In these couple cases though even though I stopped smoking the pipe continued to heat up, I've smoked the pipe today and it seems back to normal, I can't tell a difference in the draw, but that might be because I'm very careful about the draw when I pack so I might be packing tighter to compensate for the slightly wider draft hole...But I really think wind might have been the original issue

music, yes wind will certainly make your pipe hot. That is probably the issue. They sell windcaps for pipes for just that reason.
jpm, I do not believe so. A tight draw makes a pipe smoke hotter for me. I tend to open up any tight drawing pipe because of that issue. Does a open draw make your pipes hotter, now you have me curious.
