We're all here because we enjoy pipe smoking obviously. But when you think about it there is more to it individually for us. What is the "and" for you? By that I mean, what do you enjoy more because of pipe smoking? It can be almost anything to the individual. I see some people enjoy lunting so having a pipe while going for a walk makes it better for them. I can't imagine JimInks drawing without picturing him with a pipe. For those that like fly fishing, I can see it completing the experience.

For me, pipe smoking makes a number of things better.
  • I really enjoy having a pipe while I write. I don't do it often but when I do, it always seems to make it better. There is something about looking at the page on the screen and seeing the smoke waft around that makes it more pleasurable.
  • I enjoy reading much more while I smoke a pipe. It slows me down and I concentrate on it more, sending my comprehension up.
  • Because of the coffee freaks on this forum, I discovered I love homemade espresso with my pipe. For me it's a magical combination where they both make each other better.
  • If it weren't for smoking a pipe, I wouldn't have discovered that I enjoy polishing my pipes. It's a task some people hate. Others do it out of necessity and still others find pipe maintenance enjoyable which is the category I fall into. In particular, I love polishing my pipes on my buffer. I love seeing the carnauba taking them from being dull and springing them to a brilliant shine. I'd have never bought a buffer if I didn't own pipes. It's certainly not something you need especially with the cornucopia of pipe care information on the internet and the advancements in waxes like Paragon and Halcyon. But I still enjoy firing up the buffer. I'm not particularly handy when it comes to power tools or most repairs but I enjoy the polishing process, even if I am not at a pro level.

Birdwatching. While I don't hold a degree in ornithology or anything, there's nothing that gives me more enjoyment than having a bowl on the shady side of my deck, with my Bushnell binocs hanging off of my neck, waiting to see what comes by to pay my backyard a visit. I've made something of a routine out of including a report of what I see on the "What Are You Smoking?" thread. Living in the mountains 75 mins. north of Los Angeles, I'm certainly in an ideal spot to do so (weather permitting of course). A nice drink added to the mix completes, for me, the Great Triumvirate.

I only wish I were coordinated enough to smoke it while I played golf...

I am a klutz and really can't picture myself doing anything with a pipe in the mouth
Honestly it would be hazardous for the pipe, as well as for me. I live with bushland all around, and the thought of accidently setting off a bushfire is all too real.
So sitting down with the newspapers, a book or an I-pad and a drink is as much as I can manage :)

I know of a guy who could take this under advisement:

I find that the things pipe smoking enhances for me are. Lunting which I do regularly. Smoking a pipe while writing is great even if you don't enjoy the pipe as much. Group conversations especially ones that involve drinking, it gives you a moment of pause to help keep your yap shut until you have something worth saying. Otherwise not a lot of things I do with a pipe. I don't smoke and paint though I imagine that might go well together. I have a strong feeling that you don't put things in your mouth while painting.

I enjoy work with a pipe. Actually going to and from scenes, office work stuff like that.

You’d be surprised how easy a 20 hour days goes when you can smoke through 16 hours of it.

Normal work days are enhanced by a pipe too.

A pipe really comes in handy after a really bad scene. The mechanics of pipe smoking and the rhythm occupy my skull.

I didn't know there were so many writers here. I enjoy smoking and thinking. It does make me slow down. I also enjoy watching...... people, birds, boats, art, the rain. Listening to music is also something that pipe smoking enhances. Pipe smoking is what I do when I'm not doing much.
