So, I finally got a round of golf in yesterday, for the first time in 6 months. Like everything else these days, it was a different experience to have to wipe down flagsticks etc. with Clorox wipes and use hand sanitizer after each hole.

Now, when I golf, I almost always bring a cigar or two with me, and I had an excellent smoke from Caldwell yesterday, but I'd really prefer to have a pipe. Every time I've tried a pipe while golfing, I've struggled with the logistics of smoking while also focusing on my golf game. A cigar is easy: you just light it and go. But with a pipe, there's the question of where to set your pipe while swinging, keeping it lit, dealing with the wind, etc.

Are there any other golfers out there who enjoy a pipe while playing the game, and what have you figured out regarding the logistical challenge of doing both activities at the same time? I feel like with the right system this could work, but I need to develop a system.

I have not golfed in the last few years, but when I did... to me it seemed just as easy to smoke a pipe as it was a cigar. Perhaps it may be due to the fact that I have on average only smoked 2-3 cigars a year.... but typical pipe smoking behavior always worked well while golfing for me.

You can touch the flag stick?! My course has the cups raised about an inch and a half so the ball doesn't drop. No rakes either. I prefer a JR Alternative on the course, when I smoke. I do play with a guy who smokes a small bent drugstore pipe filled with, I believe, SWR. He enjoys it. Me, I puff too fast.

Mike S,
Yep. I was a little surprised that the course I played yesterday wasn't set up this way, but down here in Tucson we've been a little slower to respond to this than many parts of the country. I definitely expanded the definition of a "gimme", however, to keep from touching the flagstick.

Puffing too fast is one issue I have on the course. Oh well, maybe I'll just stick to the cigars.

I had a pic of a gold mounted Peterson system that was gifted from Brian Barnes to Jack Nicklaus dated the year after Barnes won the masters.
it was all burnt up
I'm just now reading about Barnes. From his NY times obit: "A nine-time winner on the European Tour, Barnes — known for playing with a pipe in his mouth and a bottle of vodka and orange juice in his bag"

Sounds like my kinda guy!

I never made it beyond the driving range and putt-putt. The formalities and dress code conveyed to me that it isn't my thing, not to mention the greens fees. My dad played once or twice a year with a business man's club, and for that amount of play, I think he was pretty good. If I did play golf, I'd save the pipe for after. My mind is somewhat multi-channel anyway, so I have to keep my attention focused on one real-life activity at a time.

I would suggest just laying the pipe down to swing, but most of the game is just one big series of lunts anyways. I can put while clenching, and could probably swing with a clench... but if money is on the game, just laying the pipe down to swing is probably wiser.

I need to get out and play more, but it is an expensive game. The closer I get to retirement, the more I start whittling away at some non-essentials. But occasionally, I still enjoy a bucket of balls and some iced tea at the driving range.

I smoke cobs non stop on the links. Just kind of prop it up in the grass when I need to. The Dagner poker sits nicely on the green while putting. I have burned out a couple by leaving them unattended on the cart on a really windy day. Otherwise no problems. For me, a cigar would be a bigger pain in the ass.

There is no way I could smoke a pipe while golfing. I can mange it a bit when fly casting if there is no wind, but no way, no how, could I smoke a pipe with golf. If I smoked, it would have to be a cigar.

I just go cigar. Toss em on the grass, shoot, pick em back up. Easy. Never tried it with a pipe, will have to when the courses re-open in June.

I also play better with booze. Best round of my life I shot +5 on the front 9 and -1 on the back 9. Not a coincidence, hahaha.

I was banned from a bowling alley for emptying a claw machine drunk. Can't do them sober.?

Is each hole a mountain peak up there?
