Hello
I smoked a pipe. And cleaned it afterwards.

However the bowl smells like ashtray, which is hard for me to be fond of yet.

And some people have told me to wait for couple of days to see the pipe smelling more like the last tobacco I smoked.
I am aware of the fact that the ashtray-like smell will never be gone as long as I smoke.

But are there any ways that I can diminish this smell while I smoke or I clean?
And I have came across couple of methods using alcohol, vinegar, etc. (Dipping the cleaner into the alcohol and clean the bowl or put cotton into the bowl and fill the bowl with alcohol/vinegar)

Would it help to "clean" some of that smell? Or would it be bad for the pipe?

I'm quite certain I don't want vinegar anywhere around my pipes and certainly not inside them. You could try bending a pipe cleaner in half and dipping it in alcohol to wipe inside the bowl. Be careful not to get any on the finish.

Welcome to the forum. May I ask what are you smoking. Cleaning methods are a preference of that particular individual. I generally use makers mark on a pipe I've been using. Even isopropyl will work. Do you have some pipe cleaners on hand? Always allow one day drying time after cleaning to smoke again.

Swabbing the inside of the bowl with a paper towel and alcohol will work. They sell something called pipe cure I believe that is alcohol with a fresh mint scent to help cover up the ashtray smell. If it continues to bother you then unfortunately that comes with the territory of burning tobacco and you may want to quit all together :(

I'm going to venture a guess as to the lingering smell of your pipes are hurting your ears more than your nose.
Meaning, it's not YOU that's having issue with the ashy smell.

Google Salt Treatment and Retort. Helped me with a few of mine that were that way.

I've found that Lane 1Q doesn't stink too bad. I actually like the smell of my pipe afterwords. I have a childhood memory of coming upon a clay pipe that belonged to my-grandfather and finding that it smelled terrific! I wish I knew what he smoked.

As long as the tobacco doesn't have an 'ashy' taste while smoking it I don't see the problem.

After all, you're burning tobacco in the bowl so obviously it's not going to smell like roses.

Bottom line... smoke the pipe, don't smell it.

However, if by chance you're referring to an estate pipe that wasn't properly cleaned and cared for is entirely a different matter and easily remedied with a salt treatment and 151 proof (or higher) grain alcohol. Personally, there is no way on earth I would ever use isopropyl alcohol for treating my pipes.

Huh? I don't know about you but I don't jam my nose in my bowl to see how it smells. Makes me wonder what else your smelling that you shouldn't be. :nana:

Those of us who smoke all day everyday, don;t smell it, but I have it on good authority that my pipes all wreak of ashtray, and I keep mine in good order. But, I cannot smell it. But, never fear, the pipesmoker smells just as bad as the pipe, so embrace it. It is our aroma.
Back when I smoked cigarettes, I never realized how I wreaked of cigarettes too. I actually was naive enough to think that folks might not realize that I was a smoker. Until, I quit, and realized that all of my clothes, my house, and my whole body always smelled of smoke. At least now with the pipe, I smell like a better quality of smoke.
Colognes don't work, just adds to the stank. Soaps will get you clean, but won't totally cover up the smell or remove it.
Nope, if you want to smoke pipes or cigars, just deal with it. Embrace it. It's the smell of relaxation.

Thank you for your thoughts!
To aggravatedfarmer,

I smoked Sir Williams from Rattray.
To derfargin,

fortunately, my ears were never been hurt because of the smell.
...

As many of you said, since I am burning tobaccos and leaving ashes in the bowl, it should smell like ashtray (duh forgive my foolishness). I will try the alcohol and/or salt treatment but I will try to embrace the smell first as Cosmic said, "it's the smell of relaxation".
Thank you for your thoughts again!

Burning tobacco smoke binds to anything in the area. Smoke is nefarious in any form. Talk to fire fighters or insurance personnel about smoke. It invades sealed mechanisms during a fire, clocks, range dials, watches etc.

But I think there is a difference in how much of a smell is involved. It will not make any difference to most smokers but with non smokers I believe there is a lot of sincere allergy irritation as well as a great deal of theater involved in how and who may be effected.
Sharing a home with non smokers I do keep an open jar of baking soda next to my pipe racks and do not get any complaints about smoke or odours. All my home smoking is done out of doors.
To me there is a difference in a sour pipe and a pipe that smells of burnt tobacco. I do not know that a non smoker would care about the difference. :(
