Per request and for international Travellers to Vienna:
1st district/City Center
My favourite shop in all of Vienna: Josef Ostermann since 1811 family owned and still going strong
www.pipes.at/start.html --> only pipes - no Tobacco
right next to it Tabak Trafik Caufal --> also family owned by 3 Generations of lovely Ladies
Am Hof 5

1010 Wien

Österreich
phone +43 1 5357943 --> great Selection of Cigars, average Selection of pipe Tobacco and pipes
a 5 minute walk from there Mohilla Tabakspezialitäten
Kohlmarkt 6

1010 Wien

phone +43 1 5337488 --> great Selection of Cigars and Pipe Tobacco but don't expect much expertise, KNOW what you want, Pipes are imho overpriced and of mostly average quality due to the very touristy location
Rest of the City - outer Districts
Pfeifenkonsulat est. 1879 webshop only?
www.pfeifenkonsulat.at/shop/index.php?s=3&lang=eng --> no personal experience, homepage looks a little bit stuffy but has a very wide selection
Tabakgeschäft Nancy Friedenthal
Europaplatz 1 - 1150 Wien --> inside Westbahnhof Train Station great Selection of Cigars, average Selection of pipe Tobacco and pipes
Cigarren & Pfeifen Studio Schober
Thaliastraße 7 - 1160 Wien --> no personal experience but look for Prammer Pipes http://www.pfeifen-prammer.com/index.php/mainpage.html

There used to be a meerschaum shop in Vienna that sold very old and reconditioned meerschaum pipes and cigarette holders and was in an arcade near the railway station. I wonder if it is still there as the last time I saw it was about 33 years ago.

Dear Simon,
it would be a miracle if it had survived as as all the major viennese Train Stations have been completely rebuild in the last 8-10 years. Do you maybe have a name or an adress of the shop?
BTW it was your continuous praise of the green goddess the brought me to Condor Plug and I've mangaged to extend my little stash to 114 lovely little bars till now. :D
On another thing I'm also looking for those vintage Meerschaum Cutty's that you always showcase but for the life of me I can't find a source this side of the pond. Are they unique to the american market or is my searchfu not up to standard?
cheers

Hannes

I only recently got back from a 3 week trip around Europe and Vienna was one my our favourite spots - did some research as well and went to Ostermans, got a lovely sandblasted Rattray's billiard - lady in the shop knew her pipes!
Also went next door and bought a tin of Rattray's Wallace Flake (having never heard of it before and seemed quite appropriate to match the pipe).

Was just having a look to see where they're available locally to me and saw the same thing - interesting!
Although Tobaccoreviews.com states that Malcolm Flake is replica of University Flake, while Wallace Flake is replica of Erinmore Flake. (Sterling Flake replica of Irish Flake).
If it's an Erinmore replica I'd be happy with that :) although Erinmore never tastes of plum to me so it will be interesting to try. I'm intruiged to try Malcolm Flake to see if I get a Placebo effect since I was never keen on University Flake.

Most of those 'cutty' pipes were made in Vienna during the 1880s. You can find one on my 'allthingscutty' at blogspot complete with its original 'butt' plug and the Austrian pipe makers name is clearly visible in the case. I probably have the singular largest collection of these pipes on planet earth after 30+ years of collecting.

I just went to Vienna to pick up pipe tobacco I cant find here. The selection available is much less than here. Maybe 10-15% of what we have and things you would expect that are made in Germany were not avail at all. Like John Aylesbury.....NONE. Just a FYI
