I have a green planet cheapie pipe that has a air passage drilled straight down in the bowl, then the air passage from the shank meets with it. No matter how I tried to pack the bowl, tobacco still eventually was drawn into it, and clogged it up. So I grabbed a 5 pack of them from my local B&M, and tried them in the pipe. It works great, up until the point that the excess moisture from the tobacco starts to fill the air passage, which is when I just give up smoking it. (Usually about the bottom of the bowl anyway) I also use them in my MM cobs, as I cant stand the filter and don't like sucking in hot dottle or unburnt tobacco leaf.

I'm not a fan of drawing in tobacco, especially the ember-type, either. Though I don't think I will resort to buying the screens; I can see the "look" I'd get now! 8O

The only experience I have with pipe screens is from back when I was younger and smoking the kind of pipes we don't typically discuss here
As for briars, I've never found a pipe or type of tobacco that would benefit it at all. If anything I would think the screen would just get in the way.

I have a bad habit of re-lighting to the last dottle. I own two (straight, non-filtered) pipes that had once allowed a burning ember to the roof of my mouth. I must say it was unpleasant. They each now have cheap brass screens pressed into them for any further usage. I don't bother on other pipes for tobacco blockages, as I always keep a pipe-cleaner handy for that.

LOL @ Cigarmater! I have done it once when I was smoking a clay and kept relighting the dottle until I unfortunately found out there was none left 8O They hurt and they taste really bad, whole body goes into a state of shock partly from how dumb it was and part due to the discomfort. I don't think I would keep a pipe if it drew in tobacco through the stem often, but then I smoke a lot of cobs and clays which have ENORMOUS draws and I have never had this issue with them, unless I don't clean out the stem with a pipe cleaner very well, then tobacco trapped in the stem fro a previous smoke sometimes does it.

One of my law enforcement friends, has told me that if a screen is found in your pipe... they will arrest you.

It's considered drug paraphernalia... Here any way.

After careful consideration, I think I will forego membership in the "brotherhood-of-the open-sore" and leave the screens in place. I accept the risk a policeman might jump out of his car, climb up to my front porch and inspect my pipe-bowl.

(insert smiley-face here)

Uh, the scary thing bobby46 is that happened to one of our former members. Actually, when he reached down to get his crutches so he could stand up the officer thought he was going for a gun. Good times! 8O

Screens, papers, weed pipes, grinders, etc are only paraphernalia when located along with drugs. Screens minus marijuana are legal.

Bobby is back! Awesome.
Oh pipe screens? LOL No. Just no.
If you NEED a pipe screen then you're either not packing properly, or your pipe hates you. Get another pipe.

Shouldn't need a screen. I thought, what's that? That's for sloppy smokers. It's just more to fiddle with.

In my experience screens only have a purpose if smoking tobacco out of a non-glass pipe that's not designed for tobacco, no matter what they label them as at the head shop.
With that in mind, I did once smoke regular pipe tobacco out of a metal "toke" from the head shop just out of curiosity, and the screen was a must. However, in addition to trapping tobacco chunks, it also accumulates the oils and juices and must be disposed of after a couple smokes.
