I have 5, and 1 estate needing some attention. I can only enjoy a pipe once a week if I'm lucky. Some can indulge everyday. They would need more pipes.
Get as many as you can use / can afford / wife will allow / you have space for.

I fully understand your desire to know the answer to this question; however, it is such a subjective question and there is no hard and fast rule. The answer depends on your personal preference for example, do you mind smoking more than one bowl in a pipe per day. Having said that, the general advice is to let your pipe rest at least one day for every bowl you smoke in said pipe in a given day. So if you smoke two bowls a day per pipe you would want to have at least three pipes so that each pipe would rest for two days.
Here is what I would suggest, first, get yourself some corncob pipes. These are relatively inexpensive and you can add several pipes to your collection. Second, try smoking your pipes as you would like and and let the pipes tell you when they need to take a break. Third, if you are like most of us, you can never have enough pipes. Finally, we have one member who is trying to smoke only one corncob pipe for an entire year, and he smokes many bowls a day.
Relax and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the forum Tmay.
Just so long as the pipe is properly cleaned and dried after every smoke, one could certainly survive with just the one pipe. However, whereas grilled lobster is rather nice, one would soon get bored with it if it was on the menu every day.
Depending on how often you smoke will ultimately determine how many pipes you accumulate...that and being on this forum too :puffy:

Jay.

I have 150 pipes so I may not be the right person to answer the OP's question, but I'll go out on a limb and say 4 briars and 3 cobs. Smoke a briar and then a cob and so forth and so on.

If you can keep it at a dozen, or twenty, or thirty, do so. Between numerous gifts and my own PAD, I have too many, but still enjoy them all. As for how many are optimal, it depends how often you smoke. A moderate smoker -- a bowl or two a day, with days off for good behavior -- I think ten is plenty. But if you enjoy buying and receiving pipes, all bets are off. They do proliferate despite your good intentions.

I have 40 pipes, but of those I only smoke about 20 of them on a regular basis. Of those 20, I have 10 that are in constant rotation.
It's different for everyone, and over time you'll find what pipes you like/dislike and what ones you really enjoy and want to smoke often. Once you do that you'll have your rotation.

I own more than I can regularly rotate, and find myself rotating groups instead of individuals.

I've got several of a type or brand for instance, I'll smoke those for awhile then go to another grouping.

Grabow, LHS, French, Italian, English, 1/4 bends, 1/2 bends, straights, meers, whatever group you decide to make up.

I've acquired most of my collection through estate auction on ebay.

Each pipe affords a different potential. Variety is the spice of life, and, all you really need is a couple of Missouri Prides, and you're good. (or I would be)

One constant is my 'group' of cobs. There's always a cob or three in my daily rotation of approx 8 - 12 bowls.

Easy maintenance, dependable performance, comfortable stems.

1. No matter how many pipes you have, you'll always want more.

2. Being on a forum increases the number of pipes you buy, as someone is always posting pictures of the great pipe they just bought; that is, being on a forum makes you pipe crazy.

3. Thus in a year or two you will get to the point were you have double the amount of pipes you need, and the challenge will become not giving your pipes a rest but but giving them service.

4. By appearance resting makes sense as we see the darkness of the bottom of the bowl and note that that is a change. Ah, water, this pipe needs a rest. In principle it makes sense as we posit that the water will add moisture to the smoke through steam, and steam is hot, and mouths don't like hot. Also gurgle. This makes sense and is prudent, but almost no one can detect small changes in a smoke.
So I rotate a pipe if it's been smoked a half-dozen times in a week, or two. There's no rule other than prudence.

I have 150 pipes - ray47
That might still be a little low on the numbers but Ray is headed in the right direction. The more you have to rotate the more fun the hobby, I always say... especially since I do sell pipes. :puffy:
