Pipe of the year, Arbitrary ?

What makes a pipe ,pipe of the year ? Who decides? A quick google offers nothing definitive just this and that pipe of the year. Might be an interesting way to get birth year pipes other than Dunhills. Anybody who has already looked into this I’d be grateful for more info…

Some pipe clubs may select a carver to do a pipe of the year and a number of pipe companies and artisan carvers will use the term as a sales promotion. Essentially, it's an arbitrary distinction, not an award of some sort.

Good to know I’m getting birth year pipes to smoke on my wife and kids birthdays the wife is easy an estate dunhill but I want expand for the kids I see Peterson’s and Savinelli’s might go for broke see if I can find a 2018 ser Jacopo

Pipe of the year is like man of the year, just with usefulness.

Dunhill dated their pipes for warranties.

So like everything else it’s marketing, marketing and suckers.

I just grabbed a 2022 Pete. So yes, I’m a casual friend of marketing.

The guy in charge of whatever company makes them. I'll tell you that it usually just something they want to make. Not like a most popular pipe that year or anything.
