I always use them, have them on all pipes I smoke. I have dentures so in order to save the dentures and my pipe stem I use them, I am a wet chomper for sure! If you clean them regular then there is no issue with anything, I mean your saliva does accumulate under them but with some water just washing the stem off and the rubber bit there is no issue
