Hey all. I have a small walk-in closet in the basement where I keep my pipes, tobacco, whiskeys, guns....its kind of my 6x4 "man cave".
I have about 10 pipes on a rack, and I would say I keep them fairly clean. My tobacco is all stored in Mason Jars or unopened tins. I do keep the empty tins because I like them- they are in a rubbermaid drawer.
The problem I'm having is that the closet, and the room its attached to is begining to smell like "old pipe" and it occasionally even drifts into the hallway- near the guest bedroom.
My wife has reallly started to notice it, and while she's pretty tolerant of this hobby, she's not enthused about this smell. Nor am I.
Suggestions? I've thought about some sort of pipe cupboard to contain my pipes as I'm guessing most the smell is from there. Any body have this issue?
An expensive commercial grade ionizer won't be a feasible option for me :)

I have a plastic utility cupboard in my basement that I store almost all of my pipes and tobacco. It does have its own particular scent, but the closet manages to keep the smell contained. Worth a try, I reckon.

They do make an odor eliminator air spray for cigar and pipes, I don't know how well it works, but you could also try that if you want a certain fragrance in your room.

I've had the same issues, so I moved my pipes to a Rubbermaid container for storage between uses. This seems to have solved my problem. I plan on building a cabinet for my pipes once I can design what I want and have the time to build it, but for now, the Rubbermaid works. I keep my tobacco in a cedar box that keeps the tobacco smell contained in there. I must tell you, sometimes I open my cedar box just to enjoy the marvelous tonic-like aroma of my tobacco!

My rotation is stored in a dresser drawer in the dining room with some baking soda and coffee beans. You can smell the pipes when the drawer is open but otherwise it is not noticeable. I also store some tins in the drawer above. I keep the pipes I am smoking for the week out on the kitchen counter, so only freshly cleaned pipes go in the drawer. I clean with alcohol, and keep an old t-shirt underneath. Maybe the combination of the closed drawer and diligent cleaning keeps the smell away.

The baking soda works great. I keep my pipes in our room in a cabinet on my dresser and it has eliminated or really toned down the smell. My wife is actually really sensitive to smells and she told me that the baking soda really helped.

One of my friends work in te oil field and stays in a mobile home when in Oklahoma. When he needed a way to store tobacco without the smell he bought a 50 dollar fridge off of Craigslist and put his tobacco in that. Of course he never plugged it in.. Says it works for him but personally I think it's a bit to tacky. Hope that ideal helps! :D

Great post. This has been my wifes complaint about my hobby. I keep my pipes and tobacco in a kitchen cabinet. It doesn't smell unless you open the cabinet door. So if you can contain your pipes in a cabinet I'm sure that will help. But I'm also going to try the baking soda in the cabinet. Great idea.

Baking soda is definitely the way to go. Cheap and it works well. I use it with not only my pipes but under the kitchen sink where our kitchen garbage is, not a whiff of anything, and the wife has a particularly sensitive nose. Just be sure to replace like Roth said, every 4 months or so.
