Sorry for all the basic questions, but I have another. I have two pipes right now. The first one came as part of a starter kit and is a greek briar pipe--no idea what brand it is. The second pipe is a Mr. Brog churchwarden pipe. My question is whether the mouthpiece detaches from the bowl. I cannot tell and don't want to break the pipe by trying to remove it and snapping it off. One of these days I will have some more expensive pipes, but right now I'm wanting to be very careful with the two cheapies that I have. Thanks!

Like rothnh says, a nice easy gradual pull in one direction. Don't saw it back and forth. Likewise in replacing the stem, ease it back into place,

in one direction, planning ahead so the stem ends up positioned correctly when you finally ease it into place. I doubt you will discover this, but

some pipes have a little metal fitting inside between the shank part of the bowl and the stem, usually called a stinger. These are mostly found in

older pipes, or a few brands like Kaywoodie that always have them. Just mention this so you won't be dismayed if you find one.
And, again, wait until the pipe is completely cooled to remove the stem.

Always twist the stem as close to the brier shank as you can...NEVER twist the button (the bump you stick in your mouth) as it can snap off.

You didn't mention how long the stem is on your churchwarden, but you will need to buy longer length pipe cleaners. Ask your tobacconist to order some in if he doesn't have them in stock. I've seen pipe cleaners up to 14" in length. Wet one end of the pipe cleaner with alcohol and swab out the stem. This will help avoid gradual build up of residue in the middle of a long churchwarden stem.
